We had brutal 40C temperatures this year. That is going to get much worse, for sure, in the coming decades because of the failure of industrialised countries to reduce their CO2 emissions since Kyoto in 1990.
But governments (and it is government scale urgency and [action](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-58130705) that is required) can still make a big difference in the future trajectory of global heating by funding and supporting policies that reduce CO2 emissions.
Good job this wasn’t in Sherlock Holmes’s day, him and Watson would be buggered.
They travel there using oil, they hold there pretty plastic banners made from oil and use glue made from oil.
It’s all a very nice and noble aim, but they don’t offer any viable alternative at all.
All these groups of activists, Insulate Britain, Stop Oil, Extinction Rebellion and others,, are their members overlapping so that its the same couple hundred people doing all the events or are they very separate groupings?
If they want the public to get behind them they need to find a way to protest that doesn’t piss us off.
We need to go nuclear, then. That’s currently the only non carbon-dioxide producing technology capable of meeting our power needs.
Reminds me of the age old internet advice “just stop being bullied online like wtf just log out bro lololol”
Anyway, I’d have thought stopping oil would put a significant stain on the entirety of our country since it’s used for so, so many things other than fuel.
Imagine just stopping over night. Manufacturers everywhere would be on their knees and I wouldn’t be able to buy convenient cheap things anymore. All garages out of business, maybe a quarter to half of the country out of jobs and their businesses made redundant.
Not to mention we’re apparently in an energy crisis that isn’t totally manufactured or anything, we would actually be in an energy crisis as electric would plummet and the prices would be considered extreme luxury tier.
Basically, unfortunately, oil is here to stay for a long time until these can be made redundant by another fuel source, another super material, another way of generating an abundance of electricity and invented by people who aren’t interested in controlling the planet and are also not assassinated before it’s adopted by millions.
Slim chances, just let people get to their shitty jobs or see their families or buy their weekly shop and stop blocking the roads and do something productive like trying to invent a better product than oil.
Why do green campaigners always live in a fantasy land? “Just Stop Oil”? The entire western world would collapse without oil derived products. It’s about way more than just what you put in your car. We need to move away from oil as quickly as we can, but “just stop” would literally be the end of civilisation.
Enough with the nonsense . Betcha all of them took the bus there, which runs on oil . Diesel likely.
They need a good hiding off someone , do something proactive to support your cause not stop everyday traffic going to work, and fuck all you do gooders who defend them, I care about environment but don’t sit in a road because I haven’t got the time too… need a slap they’d move then
“just stop oil” printed on plastic banners while wearing synthetic hi vis vests, with plastic glasses all carried there in synthetic bags, wearing synthetic shoes.

Good for them. What they are saying needs to be heard. The planet is fucked, huge climate-caused migration is coming while fossil fuel lobbyists have worked hard for over 30years to minimise efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and we have a government who effectively bans on shore wind, spends a pittance on cycling infrastructure, continues to [subsidise fossil fuel extraction](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jan/23/uk-has-biggest-fossil-fuel-subsidies-in-the-eu-finds-commission)
and [gave up on insulating homes](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/19/where-britains-journey-to-insulation-went-wrong) in 2013 (despite home insulation being a very effective CO2 reduction strategy)

Look at this [chart](https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/carbon-dioxide/) to see how utterly unprecedented the current levels and rate of rise of atmospheric CO2 is.
