Asda offering soup, roll and unlimited hot drink to over-60s for £1 this winter

  1. What a nice gesture – hopefully other big corporations follow suit and do their part to support vulnerable groups.

  2. Asda a currently in the process of cutting the £1.50 driver premium, giving them a pay cut.
They are the lowest paying out of the big four supermarkets. They don’t care about the cost of living crisis for their staff.

  3. Reading this literally made my eyes well up with tears. Our country is so fucked up right now, that ASDA has to step up, and help people.

I don’t deny it’s good PR for ASDA, but it will also genuinely help a lot of struggling older folks. It’s a stain on this government, and the Tory party, that we’re all in this situation.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We can, and should be, doing better, for everyone.

  4. I’m so bitter at this point that any assistance for boomers while young people suffer makes me fucking furious.

It’s not me, I want everyone to be OK. I’m reaching the edge of my limits though.

  5. Just wait for the report in the DailyMail of some over 60 rolling up in their Range Rover, parking up in the disabled spot and pulling out a large flask for the soup.

  6. I genuinely hate hunger at any level, as somebody who grew up in that kind of environment its trapping to say the least! not getting into the whole subject but when we live in the same country that can put on a display like the Queens funeral surely we can do better when people need help to eat!

  7. If they lowered their prices ( all supermarkets) they’d be helping everybody this winter.Instead of pulling p.a stunts like this, whilst still making a huge profit

  8. Love it how the class war is dominating this thread. And not the total and utter failure of our government to reign in excessive corporate profit.

    Not profit, excessive profit.

Please for the love of god can other people point this out.

  9. Realistically old people have dreadful bladders so after the soup they won’t want unlimited teas and coffees. While they’re at Asda they’ll also stock up on overpriced Mr Kipling cakes, luxurious toilet paper for their withered nether regions and pearl barley. Genius marketing tbf.

  10. As much of a nice contribution this is, it’s really just an optics thing considering the fact that asda have increased their prices faster than other supermarkets. Especially for what used to be their smart price range.

The smart price replacement has a smaller variety of products and they charge more.

For example smart price frozen cooked and peeled prawns was 400g packets for £3.50. The replacement is 250g for £3. That’s an increase of £3.25 a kg.

The also got rid of the cartonned juice from concentrate and have reduced the range to just apple and smooth orange

  11. They should offer them some Jamaican ginger cake since they have an extra one that they missed off my order the other day.

  12. I’m sorry but my parents are both over 60, still work, don’t have a mortgage, have a huge pension probably and plenty of savings. I need help far more than they do.

  13. What the fuck is going on in this thread?! People are actually advocating to just let old people die?! What the hell man, everyone is struggling right now and needs help. You absolute heartless bastards. You cannot criticise old people for voting against your interests when you are literally advocating that they freeze and starve to death.

I’m 26 BTW. Yes I’m mad about the tories and brexit, but the reason I’m mad is because those decisions were bad for EVERYONE, they hurt EVERYBODY.

  14. Yet more assistance for boomers while the young struggle. I imagine this is funded by stolen wages from their workers.
