>Industry estimates the US-market will be worth £37 million in the first five years of trade, opening up access for British farmers to a market of over 300 million American consumers to enjoy the United Kingdom’s world-renowned lamb, part of the government’s work to boost exports and grow our economy.
>Industry estimates the US-market will be worth £37 million in the first five years of trade
So on average 7.4m a year. According to IBISWorld, there are 26,355 sheep related businesses in the UK. Making the wild assumption that the added revenue will be equally distributed, each business can gain a whopping GBP 1,404 (I rounded it up) per year.
This is the brexit people voted for.
>This includes capitalising on new trade freedoms outside the EU through export opportunities, ensuring that premium products are not just enjoyed at home but championed around the world.
>…
>The Small Ruminant Rule that banned British and EU lamb imports for over 20 years was rescinded by the [US Government in January of this year](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/us-market-to-open-doors-to-uk-lamb-from-2022).”
So they’re claiming this as a Brexit bonus in one paragraph, then admitting that the necessary rule change also applies to EU members so Britain derives no advantage here. Wild.
Presuming people in the US even want to buy lamb, what’s stopping Aus/NZ from selling the stuff cheaper?
Good news, although
>the first consignment was flown to the USA
is not great – I hope that’s a one-off and future exports will be by ship.
Sheep are sentient beings who can feel pain and fear death
We did it!!!! We connected with a market with much lower product standards over the worlds second largest ocean!!!!
Finally America gets a food upgrade. Their lack of lamb is always irritating.
Well I hope it’s been chlorinated and pumped full of high fructose corn syrup before being shipped to America. Fair is fair after all.
Creating a larger market for lamb meat isn’t really helpful when the profit margins per animal remain minimal and exacerbated even further by the devaluation of the pound. Yes, we’ll sell more, but what’s the point when you’re not making any money?
Farmers have been incredibly fucked over by tory rule and brexit. Gotta laugh though. Its exactly what they all voted for.
