I have a song on Spotify about depression, I won’t link it as this isn’t a self promotion post.

In the past week it ended up on a playlist and got some listens (not a massive amount but more than I have ever had) and so far 98% have been unique listeners in Helsinki.

Just posting to wish you all well and to also say that today is also World Mental Health Day should it benefit anyone.

I recall articles about Finland being one of the happiest places on Earth so I am hoping that this is just a glitch and that you are all okay.

  1. We are the most content people, because things work (for the most part) as intended.

Happiness, on the other hand, is a different beast.

  2. Our music is in general pretty melancholic, and has been so all the way to folk songs. We’ve grown attached to that. (Just look at the amount of metal bands per capita here)

  3. The song is very “Finnish” for a foreign song. The calm melancholy sounds very similar to Finnish songs. Finns aren’t more depressed than others, but there’s a bit of a mindset among artistic people that “happiness is childish, true art is allowed to depict only sadness”.

Edit: If you think Finns are too obsessed about melancholy, you should watch Finland’s funniest comedy Lapland Odussey (Napapiirin sankarit) to see that we can also have wholesome fun. The comedy starts with 3 suicides. Here’s a [short clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7UtpP82uhs) to set the mood.
