I think it was illegal to not have one of these in your house growing up

  1. I have one, don’t know where it came from, probably came with the house. It’s painted black and houses the fire lighters and matches.

  2. I remember slipping on the kitchen Lino floor while running when I was a small lad. Went headfirst off the corner of this thing. Still have a scar on my face to this day.

  3. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one, what is it used for?

EDIT: Literally just called to a friends new house and low and behold THEY HAD ONE

  4. Those and certain SuperValu furniture (those lockers with the crosshatch over the door’s particularly) are peak Irish home vibes.

  5. I still have ours. Ours hasn’t got a flat top – the top is slanted. It was originally bought in Roches in Dublin. They always had tons of them.

  6. We were only talking bout these the other night. My wife insists they have like a velvety lining in them but I can’t remember if that’s true. Seems like it’d be a bad idea. Anyone know/remember whether the inside was velvety or at least fabric?

  7. My favourite household item! Sat on the step of the mantle, by the fire. Matching with all the other brass trim. My ma, would spend hours cleaning them all, once a week, with the brasso, I’d have to leave because of the smell. Hidden beneath that brass lid however, was the brass box bundle, my massive collection of Matchbox cars. I miss that box and its contents to this day.

  8. My brother still has one dimple on his cheek when he smiles because he smacked the corner of it with his face when we were young. The good old days when everything had sharp corners 😂

  9. There was one in a local charity shop recently. I opened it and you know well there was still turf and fire lighters in it haha

  10. Jesus you brought back some great memories with this pic.

We had one in my house for sure (80s / 90s Dublin) used to keep all my dinkies in it but now I’m thinking of my passed aunties and old friends houses that had one too.

  11. I haven’t seen one of these since I left when I was 7 but it instantly brings back memory of nana bridies open top mince and potatoes and the most itchy blankets ever made.

  12. My grandparents had one, I had forgotten all about it but now I can see their old house like I’m there

  13. I moved to Australia 10 years ago (I’m from Wicklow) and I have been on the hunt to find one of these or something similar as I’ve just bought my first house and it won’t feel like home until I have one.
