The NHS Can’t Take Austerity 2.0 – The NHS is already on its knees, and the government want another round of public spending cuts, just as the cost of living crisis causes a fresh wave of health disasters. Let’s call that what it is: social murder.

  1. They are just trying to nudge us closer and closer to an American model where we all go ‘of course we should pay for healthcare’

  2. The country’s ambulance service, police, courts, primary care, hospital care including cancer and surgery, dentistry, elderly and social care, mental health services, and maybe it’s voters, are all no longer really fit for purpose.

  3. The tories are salivating over the deals they can sell out to their mates and mastsrs for the bones of the NHS

  4. It’s also quite high up the social pecking order. I mean there are people who consider themselves middle-class whose well-being will be seriously risked by what the Tories are planning to do.

  5. The challenges the NHS faces this winter will be astronomical.

    1. Flu.

    2. Covid, is still around we aren’t clear yet.

    3. Domestic Blackouts – this will massively increase accidents and house fires, candles left to burn etc.

    3. Financial pressure on people, increasing suicide, self harm, domestic violence, depression, drinking etc.

    4. Increases in crime, with obvious impacts.

    5. People not keeping warm, either not being able to afford it or fear of bills will increase in elderly and child illness.

All that before they get thier budget cut. I will stop there it’s looking really fucking grim.

  6. American here, let me tell you guys a horror story

I went out once as an 18 year old and got very drunk. At some point in the night, I decided to just sit down on the sidewalk (this is an area full of bars and nightclubs). Bad mistake, prompty passed tf out.

Apparently someone called the emergency services on me fearing for my health. Cops came, who then called the ambulance. I woke up the next day in a hospital.

A couple weeks later, a $5k medical bill showed up in the mail. HALF of that was for ambulance services. Mind you, they transferred me less than 3 miles, and all I got was an IV (no stomach pump or anything). The hospital bill was $1k+ and the rest were doctor bills. I stayed in that hospital MAYBE 4 hours, probably less (discharged at 7 am).

I had no insurance and they gave me an uninsured discount of 20%. Still owed $4k…

Fight however you can to keep the NHS. Trust me, you DO NOT want to end up like us lots across the pond.

  7. Others may disagree but I think the NHS should move towards the French model, where the patient pays a small fee and the rest is subsidised. I think a small fees does two things, it helps provide some income and also it deters people using the service for silly things.

I say this because after being unwell for the past few months I have come to realise that the NHS really is facing an crises and if it collapses I wouldn’t place any bets on private healthcare providers because over here they just send difficult procedures back to the NHS

  8. Can categorically say the NHS is in dire straits , I’m currently fighting for a prostate cancer operation to be done within 8/9 months . I’ve fought tooth and nail to get the scans done in a timely manner to be told up to two month wait for the test then up to two month wait for the results . It’s an absolute disgrace and I wish I’d know it was in this condition so that I could have got private insurance . The trouble is they are hiding the real wait time figures behind different data analysis , they are saying we are sticking to targets , but not saying how long it takes to wait to actually get into the system . For eg , it took over two months for the GP’s referral for suspected prostate cancer to get a scan . Then waits of unbelievable times for tests .

  9. They want more cuts let’s start with MP’s benefits. Cut their wages, stop them from claiming second houses and make them pay full price for their god damn food. Any donation to them or bribe…I mean gift over £3.99 has to be handed over to the treasury. The pm should work for national living wage. It should be a job done out of love for the UK and not for the money…

  10. At what point are we allowed to defend ourselves? Now it came out they killed 330,000 of us with austerity between 2012 and 2019. Are we just going to sit here and let them kill more?

  11. “It doesn’t affect me so it’s not an issue” this is basically the main reasoning behind every Tory decision

  12. I am am so sorry you are all going through this. They just want you to have to pay for it. Greedy fucks. We can die over here if we cannot pay. Health care for profit is fucking evil.

  13. The Tory’s are trying to do what they started with austerity 1.0. Which is the same as they tried to achieve by disproportionately cutting funding for councils that were labour.
Get the people impacted to blame those who are in front of them (rather than those truly causing the issues) and so win more votes and properly privatise the NHS.

  14. It’s all good guys, haven’t you heard? the highest paid will pay less tax and will therefore flock from around the world to work here, because the uk is so progressive. I assure you that the extra wealth in the pockets of the 1% will trickle down to you peasants eventually.

  15. If I hear one more fucking GOP redneck tell me the NHS has death panels and that you’ll have to wait a year to get treatment for Pancreatic cancer, I’m going to take a flight to San Antonio, Texas and take a shit on the Alamo. Ozzy ain’t got nothing on me.

  16. This has been the goal of the Tories all the long, to cripple the NHS and privatise it so we have a healthcare system like the USA. Thatcher wanted to do it back in the day, but she knew if she did the Tories would never see power again.

We’ve already started hearing the stories about how only privatisation can save the NHS, when all that is needed to save the NHS is for corpos to pay the tax they owe.

  17. And the Tories didn’t like Rishi who upped the taxes to pay for all this (and more)

Apparently, people don’t like realistic fiscal policy and want to live in fantasyland.

  18. And then the campaign for increased private healthcare really kicks in.

What happened to that extra £350 million per week the nhs was promised on the side of that bus?

  19. Not just the NHS, add the Police to it too. Already struggling with demand and the most recent PEEL reports look harrowing across the nation.

This proposed cut to public spending is absolutely horrific. People will die at the expense of the Tories neglect of the country. Everything they do seems against the best interests of the country

  20. As a public sector worker I’m already bent over from the arse raping we’ve received over the last twelve years. Not going to bother standing up as the Tories are already lubing up for round two (Round 14?)

  21. The way moat folk are being made to live because of decisions made by government and our supposed elites is damn inhumane.

  22. Serious question…..why are we just getting on with this and allowing it to happen? Why is there no protests?

  23. Dear Tory voters,

you got what yoy voted for, now please stop complaining that we’ve left you in a corridor on a trolley beause there is not bed, that we weren’t able to give you an appointment for whatever in the next 12 months, that your local A&E is shut, or that eventually there is no health service available.

Remember, this is what you wanted!

What? You mean you only voted for the Tories beacuse your pension would be protected, or that we could keep those “coloured Europeans” out, or that they’re the “natural party of government” and that they are the only ones you can trust with the economy.

Well, they say you get the government you deserve and you are.

From an NHS nurse, thanks for all the claps anyway

  24. I think the Conservative Party knows the NHS will not survive and I think that makes them excited.

  25. Mate that’s their plan they know what they’re doing. It’ll get to a point where there’s no other option then to sell it and make shit tones of money for the big boys. The end of our National Health Service will be the fall of Britain as we know it. Get these clowns out of government.

  26. The government are a f**king disgrace and are purposely strangling the NHS.

Dentists are already refusing to take NHS patients and GP practices will be next.

They’re slowly chipping away at it piece by piece. It makes my blood boil because most people are too busy watching f**king TikTok videos and “reality” TV bullshit to notice what’s going on

  27. After reading some of the comments I don’t understand how Americans stand for that. Heathcare tied to your job? Absolutely not. Paying for insurance like you’re foreign in your own country? Are you crazy? No. Absolutely not.
This country needs a revolution to get out the grips of major corporations

  28. I’ve just got out of a weeks stay in hospital and the main reason for the NHS struggling is painfully obvious but is barely ever addressed.

Around 50-60% of the beds in my ward were taken up by people in their 90s who were extremely frail and had extraordinarily complex needs. For all intents and purposes they were dead to the world and had a truly terrible quality of life. Talking to nurses, the majority of them were long-term stays who can’t be discharged because there’s nowhere for them to go.

The main problem appears to me to be in the care sector, and the knock-on impact of shortages there has crippled the NHS and turned hospitals into quasi-care homes.

As well as more funding for care homes etc we as a society need to have a serious grown-up conversation about how to deal with severely ill and frail old people. Should we throw all of our precious and finite resources at them or should we instead focus on palliative care for them, making their final days as easy as possible without trying to unnecessarily prolong their lives. I find it insane how we put down dogs who are severely frail and ill as it’s the ‘humane’ thing to do yet we try to prolong peoples lives as long as possible no matter what the price (emotional and financial).

But I know we’ll never have a proper conversation about this as anyone who dares would immediately be derided as the devil themselves and be ostracised from society.

  29. You know, the saddest thing to realise is that in my entire adult life, I have never once heard that the NHS is receiving enough to grow and prosper. Recruitment’s up etc etc.

It’s always on its knees. Always. And I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love that it’s here for us if we need it. Imagine being one of the richest countries in the world and continually electing parties that just loot the public for everything they can while degrading the standards of living.

  30. Everyone keeps voting for them the tories will never change no matter which leader they choose they all piss in the same pot!

  31. The Tories have been and continue to do all they can to degrade the NHS and push people into private healthcare with one objective to hand everything over to private healthcare insurance and create a two tier healthcare system which leaves those in need with nothing.

When I campaigned for Labour in 2019 GE I said to my non political friends it was about the NHS, they said no it was about Brexit.

And I was right then and I say exactly the same now the NHS is the corner stone of caring society and of a fit for purpose welfare state.

Once it’s gone it’s gone and like Council house building the NHS is what makes us.
