He also said Monty Python would not get commissioned by the BBC today “because it’s six white people, five of whom went to Oxbridge”.
Channelling Basil Fawlty more and more as he gets older. Soon there won’t be any John left, only Basil.
I was doing some contractual work in a children’s clothing shop in London a few years ago, John Cleese came in and bought a teddy bear. The girl serving him had no idea who he was asked him if it was for his grandchild, and Cleese responded in his brilliant Basil Fawlty sarcastic brilliant manner, “no, it’s for my wife, she refuses to travel without one”.
I cracked up, the girl serving him had no idea why.
A little moment I will treasure forever.
I mean, cancel culture is too often purely synonymous with censorship.
Cancelling politicians who betrayed their people is something we can all agree with, I think. But it’s a different thing. Moralization isn’t always the right path. Reality and satire are both very important as well. Monty Python fought puritanism in their days, it’s only logical that they would keep doing that.
