CMAT–she’s an Irish singer from Dublin.

The actual song is catchy, and the lyrics are good (when I read them), but I can’t understand what she’s saying because how the slurred, marble-mouth way she delivers the lyrics. Even though the melody is nice, but the singing style makes me incredibly frustrated and makes me want to turn it off.

  1. I personally don’t mind the style of singing and I think she’s far more original and creative than half of the usual Irish artists/bands we get shoved down our ear canals on the radio

    Also she’s brilliant live

  2. Music can, and is often, about the vibe. The lyrics of a song being a kind of scaffold on which the singer drapes their cadence, pitch, timbre, aesthetic, etc etc choices to create the vibe they’re going for. A singer may even write seemingly non-sensical lyrics that may be of some relevance to them personally – which helps them evoke whatever feeling they are wanting to evoke, but fairly meaningless to the listener beyond the overall impression or vibe of the finished piece.

Long story short, the singers and producers know what they’re doing – it’s a creative choice. And if the lyrics are hard to make out through the wall of artistic representation, it is likely intended to be that way … In which case, maybe just let the vibe wash over you.

PS; I’m always recognising new words in songs I thought I knew like the back of my hand, words I either couldn’t fully make out before or that I had mistaken for something else. Usually doesn’t alter my sentiment towards the song too much.

  3. Her enunciation is probably okay. It’s all the reverb which is stopping me from making out the words. I guess they’re gonna for that reverb drenched vocal like Lana Del Rey. Like the other person said, the music is probably supposed to be a vibe and you’re meant to read the lyrics if you wanna appreciate what she’s singing about.

Edit: I didn’t say anything negative about the song. I like this artist. Not sure why downvotes.

  4. I agree. She’s no Delia Murphy or John McCormack when it comes to half decent diction. But then that is incredibly common in modern popular music.

  5. Hey, this is great! Thanks for the pointer.

I know what you mean about the diction, but this is fine for me.

The one I hate is the Instagram voice affected by people like Dermot Kennedy (though he’s not the worst, just the one that comes to mind).
