  1. My stepdad wasn’t entitled to my mams pension payout from a government job she had in the UK before they married. They were together for thirteen years before she died and had two kids with him, he also took on me and my sister.

My criminal, junkie father who abandoned us when we were kids got the payout because he was down as her next of kin at the time she had that job.

    So gross.

  2. This might be an unpopular opinion, but this might serve well down the line when all the “Single / lone parents” might come back to bite some of the people playing the system. Can’t go claiming windowers pension after so many years of saying you don’t know who the father is while pocketing the single parent payment.

Won’t apply to all obviously but everyone seems to know someone pulling this stunt in the last decade or so….

  3. This particularly grinds my gears because they’ve no problem forcing you to be means tested as a couple to receive other social welfare payments in the first place.

  4. Myself and the missus have no interest in getting married but we recently discovered that basically we are entitled to nothing from each other if one of us dies unless we pay a fuck load of tax. Even if it’s left in the form of a will.

For some reason I had it in my head that there was a “common law” system in place where if you had been together for X number of years you were legally classed as married for inheritances and things like that. I don’t know why I thought that but turns out I was completely wrong.

So we’re going to get married, I’m going to be wearing jeans and a t shirt at the civil service – it’s just a piece of paper that means we can fully leave each other with everything.
