My local Coop recently reorganised its aisles. Voilà the hot dishes radiating heat straight into the open fridges. So much for energy saving measures.

  1. No Ivan you no understand, see, genius swiss engineering, cold meals gets instacooked just by standing near hot meals, no need for the client to heat Betti Bossi chicken and rice in microwave, is already hot.

  2. Clients complain it’s too cold near refrigerated items. Best solution is to put the heated baked items next to them.

  3. If enough customers complain that their meal is cold, they’ll probably change it back. And the shelves settings are not changed.

So the only drawback would be that your meal doesn’t stay hot/warm. Which brings us back to my first point.

Edit: actually, you’re probably right about the energy consumption since there definitely is a thermostat in the shelves

  4. You don’t need to be an expert on thermodynamics or smth. This is the kind of things that management wants done, while everyone else saw the problem coming miles away.

  5. In Lausanne, there are several Coops undergoing big renovations, and hence they were restructured to fit in 50% of the initial space.

This came with obvious compromises, and that in the picture could be one of them.

If that’s not the case, then it wouldn’t hurt to drop them a question.

  6. Could this help with overall A/C in the store since the effects on the room temperature might actually cancel each other out? Probably not though.

  7. if we reduce the working hours people will stop buying this incredible shitty convenience food and Coop can stop to do this kind of Swiss engineering 🙂

  8. The newer Coop and Migros places tend to have fridges with glass doors similar to freezers for increased efficiency. It would probably help a lot if they did that everywhere, but it takes time and space to do.

In any case, the setup here is simply stupid and every kid could figure as much. I hope this is temporary and with good reason (maybe renovations?) that they do this.

  9. If you would know how these fridges work you wouldnt mind… and how can people get mad because of that but not because they cool the drinks if its -10* outside

  10. There’s an air curtain on that reach in cooler which creates a barrier to external ambient temperatures. The hot dishes across won’t affect operating conditions of the refrigeration unit.

  11. I never get why so many shops dont put door on their fridges, its so stupid all the energy they waste…well I’m glad finally its gonna start hurting them to the point where they will cover them…hopefully.
