Pension age should have been raised a long time ago. Instead, generation rent – the very people that are paying their extortionate rents to those pensioners – will have to pay even more taxes to fund the lifestyles of the early retirement age of those pensioners. Talk about adding insult to injury. It is frustrating and unfair – not least because young people will never bet to avail of the current pension age as it will be increased inevitably
The demographic’s will look after themselves.
It’s a clusterfuck. They can’t raise the age without further alienating voters, but it’s just putting additional costs on a younger generation who will have a much smaller state pension in real terms, if any.
I would fear that those who actually do save money will have it raided or their state pension means-tested.
Nah fuck that I’m out of here.
I won’t make it to pension age.
My plan is to die young
The problem is voters. Voters are idiots.
Why are you paying for pensions, didn’t they pay for their own pensions?
Start a private pension, even if you’re only putting in something meager on a weekly/monthly basis. The state pension is a fucking pyramid scheme.
The issue is that raising the age with immediate effect really screws over those folks who are nearing retirement and have been relying on the state contributory pension in their retirement planning. While it might seem unfair, it would really be better to make adjustments to the retirement age or benefit for those who are still many years from retirement, so they have time to increase their own pension contributions accordingly.
The unfortunate reality is that people saving for retirement now really need to forget about the state pension entirely and make sure that they personally save enough money in their own pension funds to fully fund their own retirement without any contributions from the state. Unfortunately with the current cost of living that is much easier said than done, but if you can manage it, it’s the safest approach.
The rate of economic growth, and thus the growth of Government Revenue, already exceeds the rate of growth of retired vs employed – making the whole ‘pension crisis’ narrative a divide-and-rule myth/fiction, designed to pit the young against the old – making way for NeoLiberal destruction of the Welfare State (including public pensions).
It’s an incredibly flimsy narrative – one of the best examples of newspapers engaging in economic propaganda today.
Problem with generation rent paying for pensions is that they themselves will be an even bigger time bomb.
No security of tenure or property by time they retire. Absolutely problem of epic proportions coming in the future
I will in my fuck. Canada it is.
Is this true? When I retire I will have paid a shed load of money in tax and PRSI. Way more than I’ll get from the state pension. The people who pensions will have paid taxes for 40 years+, this is their state pension.
The kids of tomorrow won’t be paying for my pension, I’ll have already paid for it
Just as planned.
FFG making sure their elderly base is looked after. The fact it comes at the expense of younger people who lean towards any other parties, but especially SF, is just the cherry on top for FFG.
Having lived in Australia for a while, I liked their Superannuation system. It would be an interesting option to look at. Also you can invest it in a property early thus saving you money at retirement age since you won’t have rent to pay. I’m no expert but a change is needed
Generation rent needs to oppose any cuts to the pension and support more state spending on pensions since when we retire the only way we will be able to pay rents is by the state paying it
So generation rent needs to fucking vote!
If young people voted the government wouldn’t bend over backwards to cater to the older generations at the expense of the young.
In this instance, they absolutely fucking have to raise the age, but young people can’t be counted on to vote so why the fuck would they shoot themselves in the foot?!
Hang on.
Are people under 40 thinking we’re actually ever going to get to retire?
Folks, that ain’t happening, not unless a lot of things get either a lot better or a lot worse real fast.
This article is bang-on the money. Cynical play by all the main parties. The demographics don’t lie. Any party that can have an honest debate on this has my interest. We need to either have people work longer with increased life expectancy or import young workers to prop things up… probably both to maintain economic growth. This the model of countries like Canada.
You are voting for this, we all need to be honest with ourselves.
Then raise the pension age!? Oh wait everyone then moans that they’ll be working until the die.
Raise PRSI!? Nah people don’t want higher taxes.
I fucking weep at all the good policies or governments this country could have implemented and had if it wasn’t for the fucking idiocy of the electorate
What does she headline mean “will be” we already are.
Generation Rent don’t give pensions much thought because realistically they are never going to be able to retire. They cannot pay into their own pensions because Rent, can’t buy property because Rent, will have nowhere to retire *to* because Rent, and will work until they die so they can pay Rent.
And? Everyone has to pay for pensions at some stage.
Pension system has been fucked from the get go.
The entire model it is built off was never ever a sustainable solution. It is built on the man going to work and the woman staying at home looking after kids etc. It never took into account the amount of women in the future who wouldn’t be staying at home and have careers instead.
The taxes owed to make up this difference to re-balance the system is technically owed by those previous generations as they technically underpaid PRSI, but they’re retired now. So the only option now is to increase tax revenue, which will be paid by today’s tax payer (those not retired).
We either pay more taxes now or retire at an older age. They’re literally the only options unless the government can raise funding elsewhere… either way we will have to pay for it. All because the pension model under accrued the pot completely.
I have been working for more than half my life now and I could just as easily say I don’t want to pay for people to go to college or dole or children’s allowance or HAP. Like why are we worried about pensioners only? Are all of these things not equally important in a social democracy?
How did people not see this coming? They were banking on a population boom.
I work in pensions. Fucking disgusted to be honest. Yet another way we get fucked paying more to fund a generation that overspent while having way more than we’ll ever have.

Yes, and when the govt talk about raising the pension age, it’s generation rent [and their cult leaders](https://twitter.com/sinnfeinireland/status/1572235381109555203) who collectively go insane at the prospect.
