OEUK: Oil and gas licensing round will boost UK energy security, help move toward net zero

  1. Look. We’re not stupid. We all know this isn’t the right way to achieve net zero.

We could invest more in wind, wave and solar for example.

That’s the way; not more drilling.

  2. The tories are definitely in the pockets of the oil and gas industries. This news will not in any way help the average UK citizen.

Remember that Truss worked for Shell previously.

  3. We could just stop selling the current oil and gas to the international market, and it would be far quicker to provide security.

It’s going to take at least 6 years to get any of that oil and gas out of the ground.

Even ignoring the environmental issues, this makes 0 sense

  4. In terms of renewables, the general news cycle seems to be quite behind in terms of how much battery capacity is being installed in the UK to absorb excess renewables.

[By the end of 2021, over 27GWh was in the pipeline.](https://www.energy-storage.news/the-numbers-behind-the-record-breaking-rise-of-the-uk-battery-storage-market/)

    In 2022. [2GWh was installed](https://www.woodmac.com/news/opinion/europes-grid-scale-energy-storage-capacity-will-expand-20-fold-by-2031/)

The UK is in a good place for excess renewables, and the market is broadly understanding of this. The excess licensing is for a minority, and I wouldn’t be surprised it became unprofitable to extract in the next few years due to the lowering of renewable costs.
