I really want to donate. Something medical (minor infections) seem to pop up just before the donation. I’m doing this winter for sure.
I used to give blood, I think I managed it around 7 times. I got a letter saying my blood was too thick and effectively clogged the filters on 4 of the occasions.
I tried to give, it just wasn’t any good. Never found out why, I have the trait, but not the full blown anemia.
I’m white but my blood type is B+ which helps people with sickle cell. It’s so rewarding giving blood although since the pandemic there’s no tea available afterwards anymore only squash😢
I want to give blood but I weigh too little (I am a short female) and pass when I see/think about needles or blood.
I had no idea o negative had issues with long term use given its always in high demand when disasters happen.
Will also be interesting if the malaria vaccine candidate announced recently has an effect on the overall growth of cases of sickle cell in the medium – long term.
As part of the reason it’s more prevelant in Black people is carrying one of the sickle cell genes provides resistance to malaria, resulting in those without the gene to be at a disadvantage in the many countries where malaria is prevelant.
