The core manifesto pledges Truss is breaking and why she should call an election

  1. Well, she won’t.

But as the Lib Dems found, if you stand for election on one thing and do another thing in power, you get absolutely roasted the next time the public have their say.

    Best of luck, Liz.

  2. Totally agree, voters didn’t sign up to this sudden change of direction.
Hell even most of Truss’s colleagues don’t agree with her absurdist policies, announced one day and forgotten the next.
Besides I’m still waiting for the £350M a week to the NHS Brexit was supposed to deliver.
That’d go some way to resolving the upcoming Nurse’s Strike.
All this Tory Gov’t has delivered so far is Bullshit.

  3. >l believe that a number of extracts from the manifesto prove my point: “A Conservative government will give the public services the resources they need, supporting our hospitals, our schools and our police. We will help people and families throughout their lives by bringing down the cost of living and making sure that work always pays.

    >“We will not borrow to fund day-to-day spending, but will invest thoughtfully and responsibly in infrastructure right across our country in order to increase productivity and wages. Our fiscal rules mean that public sector net investment will not average more than 3% of GDP, and that if debt interest reaches 6% of revenue, we will reassess our plans to keep debt under control.

    >“This means that debt will be lower at the end of the Parliament rather than spiralling out of control under Labour, and we will use this investment prudently and strategically to level up every part of the UK while strengthening the ties that bind it together.”

  4. Hmm, how many voters read manifestos though? Unfortunately, I think as long as they have Braverman and co kicking the crap out of foreigners, and Frosty squeaking at the EU, they’ll be safe with many voters when it comes to the crunch of an election.

  5. It’s an interesting one. The borrowing issue is important, but lots of what Truss is doing is taking things back to what was promised in the manifesto:

    * The 2019 manifesto committed to not raising the rate of National Insurance, which the U-turn in the mini-budget takes us back to.

    * The 2019 manifesto also set out how proud the Conservatives were of lowering corporation tax to 19%, which the U-turn in the mini-budget takes us back to.

    * The manifesto talks a lot about a high growth, low tax economy.

The issue for me is that they are happy to say the borrowing commitment can be altered due to COVID, etc, but refuse to acknowledge that maybe the rest of the manifesto needs looking at as well.

The Tories were keen to invoke parallels between COVID and World War 2. But after WW2 was over the parties set out their post-wat plans and we immediately had an election. The world and country is drastically different to it was in 2019 and to move forward the people need to have their say.

  6. Ah yes, that’s incredibly popular and trustworthy news source Wales Online.

Not saying I disagree, but who the heck reads Wales Online?

  7. All these people saying that Truss / The Tories should call an election RIGHT NOW are ignoring one MASSIVE thing :

    They. Would. Lose.

So they won’t call an election. They will run down the clock until they HAVE to hold an election, and in the meantime they will line their pockets and those of their rich donors.

  8. We all know truthfully that she won’t call an election though will she. More than likely, she will allow the economy to crash some more, watch as we see rolling blackouts and laugh in all the money she has. Then eventually she might resign, and we will move onto the next likely crap conservative leader.

  9. This moron won’t call an election! She’s too self serving to do that. Needs more time to steal more money and put more of her friends in power before she “steps down”. Fuck these Tory cunts

  10. Food shortages are an issue more than inflation & inflation is bad anyway. Digital currency is a loss loss for the economy its literally a short intervention for publication & propaganda schemes misc*
The inflation of digital currency was 230% to the pound except other margins of inflation. “….” .

  11. She probably will lose one now, but if she continues she will most likely fail to get policies through due to red wall MPs rebelling in an attempt to keep their seats. Then she will be in an even worse position than now.

  12. She won’t call an election because she knows she’ll lose badly.

His Majesty needs to call an election. He can do that right?

  13. Truss’ excuse is that “people voted for growth so I have a mandate to pursue any agenda I feel will lead to that objective”.

This is disingenuous because in many matters, growth, better jobs, good healthcare, quality education, people do not vote for the outcome because the desirable outcome is not disputed by either party. People are voting for the route to that outcome; how do we get more growth? By cutting taxes, by investing in infrastructure or education?

She does not have a mandate for her route to “growth” no matter what she says.

  14. The Tories started breaking their manifesto pledges from the moment they got into office in December 2019. Why would they care about it now?
