Dr Laura Cahillane: Appointment of attorney generals directly to bench must stop

  1. Bizarre piece tbh. The central conceit of it shows a complete lack of understanding of the courts.

There is no shortage of work, the only shortage is one of judges. No judges are underused.

  2. I saw this peice via Twitter the other day, I don’t know a thing about the law but I did see this response:

    >Of the last sixteen appointments as AG, stretching back to 1981, there have been three – in effect, just two – appointments straight to the bench.
    >
    >At a time when we are short of judges as is, that does not strike me as the most immediate of problems.

Doesn’t really seem like a big deal?

  3. More barrister exceptionalism from Caos as usual.

Why is every other serious public appointment for legal experts in the civil service in Ireland is handled perfectly fine by the Top Level Appointments Commission (TLAC) e.g. the Chief State Solicitor, the DPP etc…? But judges are so special and different (because they are usually former barristers)? Yes, I know some judges were former solicitors.

Make AGs do interviews like everyone else instead of being handed judicial posts, it does boil my blood, it is political appointments, the judge shortage argument is nonsense, that doesn’t justify political appointments, ONE political appoint is too many.
