Has anybody used a back up generator before? Which ones are best to get for a bungalow? And how do you install them? Was looking at this guy https://cleanmachines.ie/product/hyundai-dhy6000se-5-2kw-silent-standby-diesel-generator/ but no idea if it’s good or not.

  1. My parents house had one. Can’t comment on installation, but just make sure you are aware they are very loud and expensive to run.

    I’m not technically gifted, but 5.2kW seems low enough to run maybe a few appliances?

  2. Very loud. Very expensive. And probably only worth the investment if youve been subject to 2-3 day power cuts before.

  3. With energy prices rising constantly my question would be should I install one and run it at peak times? What does it cost to run?

  6. No need to spend 2000, get small petrol one for a few 100, run extension cable into the house. that will get u out of a hole. That diesel one above is more for if you want to live off the grid and you’d want to be running it a good 50-100 hours a year to get value from it

  8. You need to spend about €1300 for one that will run part of your house. Then you need to spend €900 to get the electrician to put in a bypass so that when the power is out and you run the generator that you won’t back feed the grid.

    If you want full house back up the generator would be 5k.

    So it’s not as easy as people hope.

  10. It’s very simple to do, You need to get a 220v lead and connect it in to a socket in your home the other end is connected to your generators output. You then need to isolate your home from the grid by opening the main breaker after which you can start the generator and it will power your home. Just keep in mind 5kw is not that much try to limit your consumption by not using emersion heaters or power showers
