Google Maps: “This is the shortest route.” Said route:

  1. Pretty accurate. Sometimes I use Google Maps for fun on routes I know well, just to see what wild adventures it will take me on.

  2. Was trying to find the carpark for a walk recently. Ended up turning around back to the main road after I saw a handwritten sign that said “turn around, Google is wrong”

  3. Google Maps actually seems very good about routing here, unless the phone app’s algorithm is different than the web site. Other GPS systems, though, love to send you down 20km of random boreens because it’s 2.3km shorter than taking the adjacent R road and since the speed limit is 80km/h on both, the former is clearly faster!

  4. It is quite baffling, that neither Google Map or any GPS system in existence, has a way of filtering out shitty goat trails.

Why on earth would I want to go there when I can take motorway somewhere?

  5. Sometimes Waze is mental with the routes they send you on

Just because speed limit is 80kmph Waze, doesn’t mean its safe or a good idea. I’d rather be stuck in traffic than stuck in a ditch

  6. Ah stop last week there was a crash on the motorway I was on and it said I’d be 5 mins late for work. It offered an alternative route that would get me there for 9am and I took it. It end up being a closed road, like the one in this pic and I had to reverse back to the nearest road behind me before it brought me half way around Dublin back roads and I end up being 15 minutes late for work. What the fuck was that Google Maps? Should have just stuck with my first route.
