Liz Truss vows to ‘get Britain through the tempest’ in keynote speech amid cabinet split as she is heckled

  1. She just spent 20 minutes complaining about –

Growth in the last decade (who was in power then)

Tax burdens being higher than ever before under the last conservative government.

And how bad things were when she was growing up(in Paisley and Leeds don’t you know) under Thatcher.

Does she know she’s speaking at the Tory party conference or has the last week fried her brain so much she thinks she’s a Lib Dem again?

  2. >“I sit on a man’s back choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am sorry for him and wish to lighten his load by all means possible… except by getting off his back.”

― Leo Tolstoy, What Then Must We Do?

  3. To be fair to Liz here, the speech seems to have gone down OK with the room. It hasn’t been the utter cringe fest that it could have been.

Lots of red meat for the tories.

  4. Is the “anti-growth coalition” in league with “antifa”?

    Where can I join them?

The right looking for imaginary enemies to blame again.

  5. It’s a real dolly for Labour, this line on growth.

    Hand up. “Whose growth?”

They can do that every single time.

  6. How many times can she say: ‘Look, I get it. We’ve listened.’? The most tone deaf leadership in recent memory. Instead of obfuscating, actually enact some useful and effective policy!

  7. The ‘tempest’ she’s talking about is Thick Liz and her Tory government. If she really wanted to get us through it she’d call a general election.

  8. So based on that speech, she should hate what the conservatives have done in the last 12 years.

  9. Normally, people would avoid the tempest. The Tories and Leavers steered Britain right into the storm to the point that direction does no longer matter. She might be guiding Britain somehow *through* the tempest, but with her guidiance, Britain won’t get out of it.

  10. I think that Truss is the last desperate effort for the tories to remain relevant. She is going to fuck it up and hopefully sooner than 2 years!

Low tax, deregulation, lower environmental standards, anti-immigration, cuts to services, cuts to benefits…. Much of the same then???

  11. Liz Truss: I’ll create the Tempest then tell you how I will get you through it. The answer is if you’re not rich you will get through it with immense pain. If I can kill off enough poor people before the next general election they can’t vote against me.

That seems to be her plan.

  12. She’s cringe AF. I don’t understand where the “growth, growth, growth” will come from. Almost all the business owners I know, can’t fill the staffing positions

  13. Different analogy – we’re on the Titanic and she’s only brought enough lifeboats for the first class passengers

  14. She was heckled IN A SPEECH TO TORY MEMBERS, how can your own party heckle you that’s like a comedians parents heckling them..

  15. Loving the way the Tories create absolute chaos then loudly shout about getting us through it as if it’s not their fault.

  16. At some point there needs to be a government who can nationalize energy production and cost and nationalize mortgages. These two areas are massive weaknesses and need massive reform NOW.

  17. She’s basically vowing to get Britain through problems she is creating or making worse.
We’d be better off with no leadership at this rate.

  18. The best part of the speech was when the Greenpeace protesters burst in, absolute legends all of them.

  19. I can honestly say in my whole life I have never truly hated anyone but you are a souless, sack of shit that should have never been given the opportunity to run the country.

  20. Hm.. so Labour offers concrete plans with quantifiable goals and sensible aims.

Tories.. buzzwords, slogans, trite over-used catchphrases and a vague idea of making the rich, even richer in the hopes that’ll ‘trickle down’…

Yeah, I think I know who I’m voting for.
