these AI art generators are a queer things. Technically it’s pretty amazing what is going on, and for sci-fi fans the idea of computers creating art is fascinating. But… it’s not art.
Blind Boy was talking about them on his podcast a couple of months ago. And he put it in much better terms. I think he used the analogy of a Mars Bar, initially pleasant at the moment of consumption, but ultimately not at all satisfying.
AI generators are fun and novel and very interesting to play with at first, but you quickly realise how soulless and devoid of a human touch they are. Like they’re missing the essential, elusive component that makes “art” be “art”.
Actually, just listen to the podcast, he put it better, and he’s cool.
But his first two AI art prompts were pretty funny – “Kurt Cobain Cycling a Bicycle in the Book Of Kells”, and “The Autopsy of Mr. Tayto.” and no doubt possess more artistic validity as concepts that can be imagined by the reader than being fed through an AI and going “heh” at the results and forgetting about them two minutes later.

If he could see this he’d be very cross.

Did it base his face on Fresco Jesus?
What’s in his basket that he’s trying to protect? Holy bread?
It is facinating how AI gets a few things spot on here and there like Jesus’s robe. But everything else just makes you go…What the actual fuck?
Now do “I will in me hole”.
Who knew Christ was such a goth?
He’s on ice skates in Canada.
Is that the spine from the alien out of the movie Alien?
