Family of student dragged quarter-mile in hit-and-run call for harsher sentence

  1. > “Judges decide individual sentences but we have recently toughened up sentencing for driving offences, including introducing life sentences for those who kill people, so that the punishment fits the crime and to deter people from reckless driving in the first place.”

Except this doesn’t work because nobody thinks “I’m going to accidentally kill somebody today”.

That’s not to say it’s wrong to have that increase or wrong to have deterrence as an aim, but this increase will not deter crime.

That being said this is clearly too light of a sentence. I struggle to think of something more aggravating than continuing to drive whilst a teenager is inside your windscreen.

  2. All to often, motoring offences that cause death or serious injury get too light a sentence. Even drunk driving itself needs harsher penalities.

If you’re over the limit, your car gets cubed. Plus whatever fines/jail sentences apply too.

  3. It must be too early and I’m reading wrong. Did they name their kids after matrix characters just after the original films came out?

  4. It’s been said before, if you want to kill someone and get a light sentence do it in a car.

The CPS really lives in a different world to the rest of us.

  5. They need to start implementing lifetime or decade long bans for the most serious driving offences.

Plenty of other public transport options out there.

  6. I met a guy in jail who killed two cyclists. Was near Oxfordshire, he was a gay guy. Nothing wrong with that of course, but he had no regrets. Only mad about getting 10 years. But he was living it up. He had some guy in his cell who he was fucking every night. Sounded a lot like the other guy wasn’t enjoying it. Horrifying to hear.

Then on the other hand, there was a guy called Keith who killed a porche driver. He was a lorry driver. And he cried every night for that man. He got a 2 year sentence and he said he wished they put him to death.

  7. A little off topic, but has anyone noticed the lad’s name is Neo and his sister’s name is Trinity?

I doubt they can watch the Matrix Reloaded in the same room together.

Jokes aside, what a horrific thing to happen.
