Caledonian Sleeper contract to end next year as ‘not value for money’

  1. Thank goodness. I took the sleeper from London to Fort William this year with my son, and it would have been amazing, if not for Serco. The route is spectacular, the trains are fantastic; what lets it down are the Serco staff!

We were fast asleep in our cabin, but woken up at 6am by the Serco host banging on the door. We tried to ignore her. She came back 10 minutes later, smashing her hand on our door. Again, we tried to ignore her, desperately hoping this time she would get the hint so we could get some much-needed sleep – the specific reason we chose the sleeper service, the clue is in the name!

With huge reluctance, we opened the door, thinking it must be very important. What did she want? “What time do you want breakfast?” She woke us up for that! We were furious. Serco refused to acknowledge our complaints. Good riddance to them.

  2. I’m on the sleeper tonight by chance, literally waiting for my Uber to go to Euston. The ‘Sleeper’ part has always be a bit of a misnomer what with all the rocking and rattling but I love the service, use it 3 or 4 times a year to get to the Highlands for stalking.

  3. I’ve always loved the idea of going on a sleeper, but I’m concerned the novelty would kill the whole sleeping part.

  4. I was worried that it would be entirely cancelled, as I have plans to use it in the future, and had been rather keen on giving it a go. But it seems to suggest it will just be run by someone else (yet TBD)?

  5. Tory shills buying up train services before Labour get in and nationalise it all.

I mean, stranger things guys and goils.

  6. Sometimes i work up in Aberdeen and usually get the sleeper on the upward leg. On the face of it, it’s slow and expensive but it is so much more chilled than normal train (or flying) and basically saves the cost of a hotel.

    It’s always surprisingly busy too.

  7. I’ve seen a couple of travel YouTubers use this service and say how good it is – basically it’s one of the nicest sleeper services in the world.

Perhaps they need to capitalise on this coverage and go for the tourist market?

    Edit: typos
