This might be a dumb question, but I ask because I realised I couldn’t, and so I decided to fix this by learning them all, and I’ll try to get round to seeing them all during my time living here.

I’m curious because of two things: I could definitely name ~~all 50 US states without a map~~(nevermind, 49, fucking Utah), while [80% of Americans can’t do this](https://b100quadcities.com/less-than-50-of-americans-can-name-all-50-states/), but there’s no way I could name all counties in England, probably not even half, I don’t think I could even say how many there are in any sense, and I’m English.

  1. Yep, the 4 provinces and then name all the counties in them.

It was bet (not literally) into us at school.

I couldn’t name all 50 states, but I would know a good few.

    England I’d say a handful.

  2. Of course! We learned them all in primary school, along with the major towns/villages in each. I can see the map in my head.

Can never name all 50 US states though, always get to about 47 or 48 and can never remember the last few.

  3. Fuck you! I’m missing one!

    E: It was Longford

E: I got to ~~42~~ 41 US States from memory over eating lunch

  4. A Roscommon lad bet me $50 in a pub that I couldn’t so I reeled off 31 of them and pretended I couldn’t remember Roscommon. Well worth the money.

  5. Nope. I’d get to around 27 or 28 and then start naming ones I’ve already named. I done it once in primary school, but that was a while ago now.

  6. I could only remember 25, however that I’m not Irish so forgive me.

    I forgot:
    Antrim
    Down
    Monoghan
    Limerick
    Offaly
    Cavan
    Kidlare

My apology to all of these counties.

  7. There’s a website where you can type county names and it fills them in on a map and you can race against a timer to see how fast you can name all the counties. Every now and again I’ll have a go at it just because I like the idea of being able to name them all and embarrassingly it’s not something I was always able to do.

I struggled with Monaghan. Northern Ireland was handy enough because I just had to remember FAT DAD.

  9. Yea, easily. One of the best gifts I ever received as a young fella was this chunky 3D Jigsaw of Ireland and it’s counties in 32 pieces. Used to have races in our house to see who could do it fastest. Also if you pegged Cork or Donegal at someone you could do some damage!

  10. There’s a song I learned as a child. It was written by Cyril Curren. Dustin the Turkey also has a version.

  11. When I was in primary school we had copybooks with a drawing of Ireland on the back, I’d spend some free time filling in the counties and major rivers.

  12. Garrison Keilor, the American writer and radio personality, could name all the counties in Minnesota in alphabetical order. There are 80.

  13. Yeah, Id be stunned if someone couldnt tbh. I mean, Id prob miss one or two on the first pass and have to go back over before the one that needed a lil more noodle power came to mind (sorry Fermanagh btw.)

I could do the states too, with a little more trouble.

    Not so great with England.

  14. Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Carlow, Wicklow, Offaly, Clare, Limerick, Galway, Roscommon, Longford, Meath, Westmeath, Kildare, Dublin, Louth, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, Derry, Athlone, Tyrone, Armagh, Monahan, Belfast, Cavan, Navan, Kilkenny.

Apparently no I can’t, I decided that Navan and Athlone were a counties and forgot about Antrim and Laois.

  15. We had a song in school;

“Donegal, Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Caaaavan. Louth, Meath, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Carlow.” (I can’t remember the rest of it)

  16. If I could write them down, I’d be very confident. I’d have a seriously good bash at the 50 states too.

  17. I can, province by province, we learned a kind of rhyme in national school and it’s stuck in the memory bank. I could only say them in the order of the rhyme thing though

Same order as I learned them in school.

Drilled in like the times tables

  19. With a map, it’s ridiculously easy. Without a map, I got to 31 fairly handy but it took me forever to remember Leitrim. Got there eventually though.
