My grandma (1928-2021) was one of the many Spaniards fleeing north to escape the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and was put in a French concentration camp with her family. Here’s audio of her singing a song she learned in the camp (Eng. translation in comments).

**English translation**
”One damned morning we arrived,
some thousand men on a special train.
Attentive gendarmes ushered us,
and thoroughly searched through our belongings.
They led us to some barracks,
which are under construction on this camp,
and they read us such strict orders,
like recruits of a new battalion.
Argelés-sur-Mer, what a lovely place,
no one can stand your terrible smell.
And I’ll tell you something special,
everyone here does ‘it’ (poops) by the sea.
And I’ll tell you what my wish is:
to get out of these barracks, soon.”
**Original in Spanish**
”Ahora llegamos una mala mañana,
unos mil hombres en un tren especial.
Nos condujeron atentos los gendarmes,
que registraron los bultos con afán.
Nos condujeron hasta unos barracones
que en este campo están en construcción
y nos leyeron órdenes tan severas
como reclutas de un nuevo batallón.
Argelés-sur-Mer sitio encantador,

My condolences for the loss of your grandma. My grandma also lived through the civil war, she was in Barcelona and had some interesting stories as did my grandfather.
Sadly, my grandfather was also in the very same situation. Carcassonne ?
It’s amazing how humour helps to endure difficult situations. Thanks for sharing this!
