Ministers and MPs drinking too much due to work pressures, Tory MP claims

  1. Fuck off with this noise. Stop being an MP then, you’re an elected official, resign and let your constituency chose a representative that better suits their interests.

  2. What, at the subsidised Westminster bars?!?!
It must be such hard word making ~£84k a year plus expenses to screw over the country for their own personal gains.

    Boo-fucking-hoo. Quit then.

  3. Ok so if we make it like other jobs where you arent allowed to drink on work premises; take away the heavily subsidised bar and if you show up drink you are severely reprimanded.

Perhaps they wont be drinking so much

  4. Imagine having a guaranteed 5-year job, during which you can technically get away with doing almost literally nothing, with enormous perks — especially if you don’t mind engaging in a bit of corruption — and *still* complaining about it.

  5. Seems like all the justification you need to close the bar.
Drunk people are not efficient workers and definitely shouldn’t be making choices over the direction the country takes.

  6. If you’re under pressure at work (and you work in an environment like parliament where significant overtime is normalised) how are you even finding time to drink? How are you justifying drinking when being hungover the next morning, or worse drunk during hours when you should be working, will impact your work performance? Alcohol is a depressant that causes anxiety; it’s not an effective way of medicating stress when you feel under pressure.

Alcoholism and weak excuses go hand in hand.

  7. Well, I’m sure having to constantly come up with justifications for clearly corrupt acts and sell to the public policies that are against their interest would be quite pressure inducing.

  8. Close the taxpayer subsidised bars in Westminster for a start.

As for their “work pressures”, perhaps they could try living in the real world where for millions of Brits they have to choose between heating or eating, never mind getting boozed up.

    Shower of self-entitled arseholes.

  9. A drug and alcohol policy should be part of the national HSE legislation so all people are under the same rules

  10. The Palace of Westminster has its own wine cellar. It’s estimated to house around 39 000 bottles of wine and spirits valued at around £2m. Whether they’re working hard or hardly working, they are getting steamboats.

  11. Everyone here is judging them for this, but what is happening is totally understandable.

They are putting a lot off effort into transferring as much money to themselves and their mates as they can. Stealing from the nation is not easy work, they only have a limited time to do it, and it’s not surprising they need to drink to cope with the pressure.

  12. True headline meaning: Tory’s getting pissed on the job because what the fuck you plebs going to do about it?

  13. Obviously MPs, earning more than 90% of other workers in this country while taking more holidays than most of us could ever dream of, have it so much harder than the rest of us that’s why they need to be drunk on the job. It all makes sense!
