How different are they other than being inhabitated by different ethnicities?
There is no “Northern” and “Southern” Cyprus. There is the Republic of Cyprus and north Cyprus which is occupied by the Turkish Army.
In north Cyprus economy is mainly from tourism and public sector workers. Prior to the invasion many Turkish Cypriots worked in agriculture and farming. Then Turkish army made people work in services and public sector instead after occupation. Gambling and dodgy real estate also makes a lot of money, but none of this contributes to the local economy as the money goes to Turkey and Russian/Israeli property developers.
Similarly the economy of the Republic is made up of tourism, public services, banking, and agriculture. However obviously is there is no embargo the economy is in a much better state than the north.
The Republic is also very corrupt which is why there are so many foreign forex brokers located here. Cyprus is responsible for people around the world being scammed by these companies as the financial regulator is non extistant.
Cyprus also enjoys contributions from Russian oligarchs through the Golden passport scheme. Cyprus is happy to accept €M in dirty money from Russians in exchange for EU citizenship.
As a person from northern Cyprus i can say the economy is absolutely trash everything is bizarrely expensive we have no public transportation the government is a copy of turkey which means we are corrupt and is obsessed with religion even though we don’t need to all i can say is that we have better castles than the other Cyprus so get wtecked
