Supermarket chain Iceland to pay €12,000 to Travellers over discrimination claim at Irish store

  1. €3000 each is a ridiculous amount for ‘humiliation’. An apology and any funds directed to a charitable initiative would’ve been more appropriate.

    Disgraceful from the WRC.

  2. Poor management by the shop, if the same people actually done something before then they could have reason not to allow them in otherwise they could have just instructed security to keep a good eye on them!

  3. The 12,000 should be put in escrow for a few years, and the same should apply for any other Irish citizen who goes through the same thing.

The money can be collected after the alotted period of time has passed *without incident.*

There has to be a compromise along these lines, because it undermines a business’ right to effective security if they can’t refuse entry to an Irish citizen if they have a reasonable expectation that they will cause trouble inside.

Get fucked in advance if you disagree 👍🏼

  4. Having been an Irish man in the UK before the GFA and even after, discrimination sucks and the memory of it lingers long after the fact. Companies should be penalised for it if there is no just cause or prior events to justify it.

  5. Technically a Business can refuse to do business with anyone , it’s not a public space and therefore they can ask you to leave the premises without reasoning as of why they do not want to do business with you. They probably just handled the situation wrong. However their point is understandable, if it caused a loss those losses will reflect in reduced hour for the staff which is leaving them short.

  6. This happens all of the time unfortunately. I worked security for a very large shopping chain in Ireland. I was there for months and even was called to investigate staff for robbing stock. Once management found out I was a traveller I was swiftly replaced.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
