Tony Hickmott: Autistic man to be released after 21 years in hospital

  1. Holy shit man that was a depressing read. Extra 9 years because the council couldn’t do their job ? Kept in segregation and had to ask for the TV to be changed channel. Fucking inhuman.

  2. Just one of those stories you can’t ever imagine in the 21st century, but in fact 2000 other people are detained under similar conditions, with over 100 detained for **over two decades**. Deemed fit for release **nine years ago**, kept in conditions similar to a low security prison, disgraceful, heads should roll for this.

  3. As an autistic man this bit does concern me –

*In June, the government published draft reforms to the Mental Health Act to redefine “mental disorder” so that it no longer included autism.*

There is already next to no support for people with ASD in this country. What support is on offer, as we see here, is *fucking horrific*, decades out of date and often outright barbaric. I don’t think just flat out removing autism as a recognized mental disorder is an appropriate way to resolve this situation.

  4. You like to think this stuff doesn’t happen anymore. The article’s pretty vague as to why he was kept in for so long. I know people who have had really severe episodes and you couldn’t get a GP to give a shit. But this poor dude has lost two decades of his life because of incompetence.

  5. I absolutely fucking hate that psychiatrist have the power to do this. So fucking horrible.

Locked up for 21 years for being autistic. Nothing short of shocking.

  6. Is this really happening to people with autism in the 21st century, in a country that’s supposed to try to be civilised?

I worry that his parents are very old too (mother 78, father 82). Incredible they were campaigning at such an old age, but also what’ll happen if they die?
