I did get a new job. I left my civil service job for a same level private engineering job for an additional £11k a year…so yea all other public servants that can should just quit and get what they are worth no matter what that difference is.
Basically doing the same shit but for 35% more, and 1 less hour a week…feels nice. Shame my old team/old sister teams are collapsing from people leaving.
So what happens in this magical world when people stop being cleaners ? Carers ? Care home workers ? Nurses ? Porters ?
Or every minimum wage job ?
What an arse, perhaps the people struggling could do his job better than he does. In fact they would probably do it for an honest salary.
Why is he still employed? He has no competitive offering or good ideas to bring to the table.

This is one of those things where my view on this tends to surprise and annoy people but……. i (in a heavily caveated way) think this is basically correct.
The caveats though, they’re fairly major.
Firstly, if we want people to be able to access higher paid employment more easily, we need to actually at least try to help. Increase access to FE, vocational courses, more funding for OU. Short time working with pay topped up for those who study?
The Tories’ preferred solution seems to be to try to starve/threaten/frighten people into it. That won’t work and shows how bereft of ideas a lot of these people are.
Secondly, vital key worker jobs need to sit in that “better job” category. We need people to aspire to being teachers, nurses, police officers again because it will give them a better life.
At its core though, “try to find better paid employment” is fairly solid advice that’s often discounted through inertia. People put up with *far* too much shit in the workplace here and it shouldn’t have to ve that way during a massive labour shortage of all times.
