Landowner to launch legal fight that could end Dartmoor wild camping

  1. At first glance.. nasty wealthy land owner looking to stop people enjoying themselves.

    However *if true..*

    > He claims increasing numbers of people are camping on the moor, with some lighting fires, which could burn many acres of moorland. He also says they have left behind litter, including camping equipment and human waste. He adds there has been antisocial behaviour, with parties causing noise and light pollution, as well as people poaching fish.

..these do seem valid complaints and issues with people being able to freely use the land. I’m sure many of us have seen litter on natural trails, parks, beaches etc. – people can be dicks and not respect their surroundings.

  2. as a wild camper i’ve been thinking about this balance tween land owners n campers for a while. as a compromise, what if there was a registration / license kinda system where you ping your location as you pitch. That way you can be traced if there is an issue the following day. Maybe even do a quick photo upload as evidence you left no trace. If someone keeps leaving fire marks where it’s not allowed they can be addressed.
For the landowners, if they spot tents but don’t have a ping for that location they know it might be worth challenging. Would also offer them some data as to where the most traffic / risk is.

Nothing will stop the dirty campers other than strict enforcement which just isn’t viable. Maybe it’ll help separate the two though and make it easier to focus on the actual problems rather than a blanket ban.

I’d be okay with identifying myself as staying in a particular place and guaranteeing there will be no trace left if it also means I can be paranoia free and not risk being disturbed by/ disturbing a farmer.

  3. This guy just doesn’t want people on his land and is using any old excuse. The sorts who would have a party, poach or otherwise do antisocial activities on Dartmoor would do so regardless of this outcome. All this guy is doing is trying to put an admission fee onto Dartmoor. It’s preposterous that these landowners can even be allowed to take this to court given its status as a national park. It’s not even like he has a historical tie to the land. He bought it.

  4. If it’s too big an area to manage then maybe this fuck owns too much land. This country should be for all to enjoy.

And those fucks that ruined it should be strung up by the balls.
