Hi All,

Dunno if this is the right sub for this or not. So most probably I will start a new job in a few weeks time, which will be Fully Remote. I still have to get an answer for what the Job Contract be like, If it’ll be a Contractor/Freelance or a Normal Job Contract.

The salary will be around 40k or a bit more. According to the Salary Calculator below I will get around 2.2k in hand.

Do you think 2.2k is good to live alone in Tampere? And maybe money left for Savings/Luxurious Purchases? (Not all the time)

Thanks <3

  1. 2.2k will be plenty. I live in Helsinki where rents are crazy, but they will still only be under 1k/month. Bills are pretty cheap in Finland, electricity+wifi+water will be significantly under 100€/month.

Normal expenses for me are around 100-200€ per week, you can of course go lower. Going higher you really need to be attempting to spend money, imo.

  2. If it’s fully remote then why Tampere out of interest? You can work from somewhere cheaper down the train line and still get to Tampere in half an hour or an hour depending how far away if you want to party.

As for living there depends on what part of Tampere apartments range from 510 to a thousand + so you won’t have issues living on your own and can save up and eat just fine etc and it’s a student city so I guess you can find reasonably priced bars etc

Turku is a nicer city, Tampere stole it’s culture from it so maybe move there instead 🙂

  3. I lived from far less in Tampere when I was a student, but of course, then my expectations were rather low back then 🙂

Of course, I don’t know that you are looking for, but I liked T’re quite a lot: it is a right-sized town: there is plenty of places to go out, like pubs, museums, etc. and a lot of international students and people coming for business, but not so large that you can’t find a quiet place. And it is literally just a bus ride to be out in the plain, unspoiled nature.

So if I would move back to Finland one day, I think I would rather chose Tampere than Helsinki. But then again, Helsinki has the world’s coolest city-library… 😉

  4. I lived in Tampere for the first three decades of my life. They’ve been developing the downtown area pretty aggressively in the past couple of years, mostly by constructing the first part of a streetcar line. That work is done in the downtown area now, so moving to Tampere now is probably a much better idea than it would have been, say, five years ago, when the construction work was just starting and the whole downtown was in a total chaos up until pretty much this year when the streetcar started operation.

I’ve been living elsewhere for a couple of years now, but whenever I visit Tampere now I’m impressed by the looks of the nice spanking new main street (Hämeenkatu). The whole downtown area is being developed into being a more pedestrian/cyclist friendly than it’s been in the past. It was a good city to live in, and I’d say you’d do just fine on 2,200€ a month.

  5. I moved here last years august, and I’m liking it a lot better than Espoo. 2.2k€ is enough easily.

The rent’s cheap compared to the capitol-area. (HKI-ESP-VAN-KAU)

The people here are also a lot friendlier, and I feel safer.

  6. That is a Finnish median salary, so not great not horrible. You will definitely not be hungry but it won’t make you rich in a year or two.
You will still have to be careful with money, and make budget.
E.g. in Finland for 50 EUR in Lidl you can buy food for a week but if you want to go for a date on Saturday evening to movies and share one popcorn that will be total 50 EUR.

  7. I moved away from Tampere around two months ago. The rent prices have increased a bit but there are still cheap apartments and that salary should be enough if you don’t own a fancy car and eat out every day.

I highly recommend to try breakfast in Amurin Helmi and also to go to the Pyynikin näkötorni. They have really nice doughnuts in Pyynikin munkkikahvila.
Also Arboretum is a really nice place to walk. Especially at summer.

  8. I make this amount aswell in Porvoo, 700€ for my 67sq apartment, parking 10€, electricity is like 20€ internet is barely anything and phones like 25€, im able to live despite having a way too expensive car that cost me 500-600€/month

  9. That’s a good salary, I have no idea about the rents in Tampere, but since you will be working remote you could live a bit out of the city. Look for a place near a train station. Welcome to Finland!

  10. If you’re under 30, I’d highly recommend applying for an apartment through [POAS](http://poas.fi/en/). The application is free of charge and you could land yourself a great deal when it comes to rent. Last year I got an apartment (two rooms, about 40m2) in a brand new building with all the bells and whistles included, for a mere 450e/month only a 10 min bus ride from the city centre. I was a student living in 1300e/month and I lived relatively comfortable.

You’d of course probably have to factor in a monthly bus ticket as well. You can check the prices as [Nysse](http://www.nysse.fi/en/).

  11. 2.2K seems too little for how much take home pay you will get. I’m on 30k per year and my take home is 2k per month.
