House building to decline next year as developers put the brakes on new schemes in the face of spiralling costs

  1. This is an opportunity for the state to step in and build some houses. If things go quiet here on the building front we face losing thousands of tradespeople again.

  2. Would temporarily relaxing some of the renewable energy regulations to allow people to build B rated houses be enough to encourage more building?

I don’t really like the idea of reducing standards but most existing stock isn’t at a B BER so it might be a reasonable compromise. Something’s got to give at this point.

  3. Maybe if the over inflated price of land finally crashes it will be viable again

Or is that not allowed to happen

Let’s not allow people sit on land again for years because they don’t want to eat a fucking loss on their investment

  4. So unless the government step in and start say a national building program, there is no way out of this shit show.

  5. It’s going to be a great time for foreign funds to pick up cheap houses for cash from distressed buyers in a year or two…😔

  6. “House building to decline next year as the government intends to continue not building enough housing.”

  7. Housing in this country is systematically fucked. If I didn’t already own a house, I’d definitely not continue living here. And I’m saying this as a high earning tech worker.

  8. The for-profit housing model failed long ago. FF/FG view housing as a financial investment first and foremost

  9. Perish the thought that a developer might have to sacrifice their some of their short term profits. They’ll happily build some more hotels though, plenty of money in that for the greedy fuckers. It’s a housing crisis and they’re in a position to do something to alleviate it. But they won’t compromise their profits while everyone else looking for a home struggles

  10. Rents are only going to go higher, it’s bloody horrific, how are people affording private rents!?
I’ll make sure my kids can speak two other European languages as this isn’t going to be sorted anytime soon and they’ll need the option of living elsewhere.
And yes, I know housing is an issue in many places but nowhere in Europe is as extreme as Dublin.

  11. Great news as my house will go up in price. Its worth €865,000 which is pleasant but let’s hope it can get to the big €900,000 for Christmas. That will be lovely. Anything that hinders house building is fantastic news for us Home owners.

  12. The current government handed over the housing of its citizens to the free market. They are after all the builders party. They now have no idea how to get the country out of the mess. If their friends the builders stop building houses. And the vulture funds will have no housing estates to buy up. I am now 67 yrs old and this is 5th time this has happened in my lifetime.
