What a year the UK is having. Who needs a war or even just enemies when a country can just commit suicide.
> …Boris Johnson, then prime minister, promised…to fund a “£1bn electric car revolution” in the UK “creating hundreds of thousands of jobs”
> Theresa May, intended that Britain would become “a world leader” in electric vehicle manufacturing.
> Kwasi Kwarteng…said last year when he was business secretary that the electrified automotive industry would be “front and centre of Britain building back better”.
And yet here we are with:
> BMW’s joint venture with Great Wall Motor means their hatchback and small SUV models will now be made in east China, as will the next generation zero-emission Mini Aceman. A new, electric version of the largest Mini model, the Countryman, will, BMW has confirmed, be manufactured at its plant in Leipzig.
It makes sense to move production closer to the parts source and with near enough everything electronic being made in Asia those in favour of reducing the carbon footprint and reliance in fossil fuels should be rejoicing.
it feels like building petrol models here, is putting a death sentence on the factories.

If Brexit was meant to make us more competitive then they would be retooling a factory for electric models, or even building new somewhere in the UK.
Who can blame them? Nobody in their right mind would set up a new production line in the UK right now, besides, with the crashing pound and a recession around the corner Brits are unlikely to be able afford a new electric car.
Brilliant. Make trade deal with China. Watch even more secondary production move there. Observe already massively skewed trade deficit go off the rail.
This Is kinda why a solid energy policy lead by the go vernment and implemented by it to ensure energy independence is so important. Manufacturing costs in the UK are going up by between three to five times depending on the process. Heat treating, surface conversion coatings and any other “hot” process is going up 500% and machining is going up by three hundred. We asked one of the coating companies to prove it and they provided a scan of their buisness energy quotation which is going from 200k to over 1.25million. Those costs for energy will get passed on.
this is a bit odd. all the talk in financial/business circles seems to be about re-onshoring these days.
Quite a few manufacturers have been moving out of Europe over the past few years.
Some was due to the 2018 EU and Japan trade deal reducing the tariffs on imported cars down to 0%.
VW have also recently announced that they are moving more production out of the EU to China. They’ve been increasing production over there for a while.
Honda closed their Swindon plant as sales had been declining over the past few years and are now concentrating on USA and China.
Not of these are good news, but they are part of an ongoing exodus of manufacturing from Europe.
The sooner China charges the same prices as the rest of the world and India and Africa say the same the better.
Corporations constantly wanting to rape every bit of profit from absolute junk while wanting to pay a pittance to slave labour.
At no point did the public say we want cheap tat goods like what companies keep spurting. Half the shit that gets made over seas is dangerous and full of counterfeit parts.
Companies will continue to go to China to scam more profit Brexit or not. Meanwhile the media has everyone arguing with themselves over Brexit still. Either way we would be in the same place there’s no buts about it.
Nothing more than profiteering.
I was recently made redundant from the toolmaking industry. The company was forced to close due to lack of work as it’s all being placed in China and India these days. We manufactured tooling for the like of JLR and BMW.
They’re all just greedy corporations creating overpriced, inferior products.
One day China will have destroyed all competition in the West. When that happens I hope they raise their prices so much that it ruins the likes of JLR and BMW.
They’ll come crawling back to the West and suddenly realise there is no one to help them.
They’ll become victims of their own creation.
Fuck it. I’m off. I’m trade so can work and go anywhere. Then the lights off whoever’s last.
The revival of car making in the UK around a decade ago seems to have been fully killed off. I wonder what happened between then and now…
So they’re only producing ICE until 2030, when it’s banned, which they’ll then hope the Chinese buy the factory?
