Leo Varadkar says we can’t cap numbers of Ukrainian refugees ‘even if we wanted to’

  1. 64,000 people?

Fuck that’s a lot of people.

Have they done anything to help house these people?

Or are they just ignoring the situation and throwing money at them?

  2. Sorry folks , its your resident ‘far right’ poster with another update.

Not really just stuck at home with parents, hoping to get on the property ladder in the next 18 months, and sees a massive problem developing as the war intensifies again.

  3. I don’t see how it would be against the law? Which one? Sure we’ve even already added restrictions: https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/f1289-government-agrees-to-temporarily-require-refugees-travelling-to-ireland-from-safe-european-countries-to-hold-visas/

The refugees have already entered the EU before they come here and we made special efforts to bring over large numbers (well over the EU average per Capita). We just don’t need to do that and any country within the EU is a first safe country.

I’m fine with the refugees we’ve taken so far, probably not a great idea to take in more at this stage if we aren’t their first safe country since we don’t have anywhere to put them.

  4. The usual “our hands are tied” horseshit from the govt to hide behind their own incompetence. The truth is we take 2 to 4 times the number of refugees per capita than all the major economies in the EU. We are taking more than any country apart from countries that actually border Ukraine.

  5. Is Leo going to give up his home to house them? Because a lot of fucking people, including Irish folk, will be going homeless because of him.

  6. So my friend is from Zaporizhzhia. Her mum is a nurse working there. Every morning the hospital calls staff to see if they are still alive so they can roster the shifts. Insane. How can you turn away people living in those circumstances.

  7. This sub now complaining about **Ukrainain** refugees that we have to take in? From a **war zone**?

Right wing muppets. Will you boards.ie rejects kindly fuck off back there.

  8. The no limit is the price the Govt has to pay for Eastern European solidarity on the Protocol and not sending any military aid to Ukraine.
There are no free lunches in high politics.

  9. Any other country and the leaders would be going to the European Council and saying, we’re struggling, we need solidarity from other EU members to take their fair share. Whereas the Irish leaders just shrug their shoulders and do nothing constructive.

Its cruelty not kindness to the people seeking help if we accept them without being able to house them.

I will not be surprised next election if there are a load of independents elected who run on an anti-immigration platform.

  10. Funny how Nationalism is becoming a dirty word. Media love conflating it with xenophobia. People wont realise they’re being conditioned to accept this nonsense until the country is completely fucked. Its globalisation pure and simple. Brand new estates being built all over the country for anyone except the Irish. There are landlords all over the country evicting people to put in Ukrainians. Nothing wrong with helping people within reason but what is happening at the moment is a massive money / wealth grab. Its totally over the top and its being facilitated by scumbags in suits like Varadkar. More immigrants = more free money for hotel owners/landlords/catering companies and most importantly cheap labour to drive down wages. Its scandalous.

  11. We don’t need to cap numbers.

Stop giving them more than our own get, and stop giving them more than they get anywhere else in Europe, and they’ll cap themselves.
