Get the ill and depressed and force them to be wage slaves in the rat race. We’re not animals on their tax farm.
From the party that gave us universal credit I won’t hold my breath. Likely just adding additional bureaucracy and hoops for people and expecting things to get better.
Wonderful. Looks like the mental health related job loss came just in time… Can’t wait to be stigmatised even further.
What we’re looking to do here is inspire people out of poverty
Imagine, if you will, a self baking cake…
sometimes i see shit like this and think… no wonder mark fisher killed himself.
Often being productive is the best cure for depression.
Sweet, I’m a depressed person in work.
What’s the plan for helping people like me lads? More work I presume?
Just forcing people to be slaves, to pay for their luxury lifestyle. Where are these so called jobs coming from? Businesses are closing faster than 2008. They make older people work longer before getting their pensions. Nothing is manufactured here anymore. We left our closest trading partners. Everything is in a crisis. Even working doesn’t get you out of poverty anymore. Plus all the austerity cuts. They’re evil greedy dictators who don’t have a clue on how to run a successful country 🤬
I can see suicide rates going up if this goes ahead.
Unemployment is at a 50 year low. Getting people into work is not the problem.
Yeah stuff like this is why the don’t make the thick of it anymore.
Its so far past lampooning.
I already work full-time, what I need is access to speak to a therapist regularly in person without paying nearly £100 per session.
I would love to work. If someone could point me at an employer who doesn’t get the wobbles over the word ‘bipolar’, and understands that my illness goes in cycles that, even though I’m a good girl and take my medication I just can’t get on top of, I’ll start tomorrow.
Helping people that go to bed each night completely apathetic of whether or not they ever wake up absolutely dread waking up? Genius, shear fucking genius.
How about funding NHS mental health services better so people like me with treatment resistant depression can get to therapy and counselling sessions faster? How about decriminalising cannabis so I just be dumb and happy for a couple hours?
So recent data suggests that workforce participation rates are low due to the 55+ choosing to leave the workforce post pandemic and there’s a larger than historical average amount of people in this category that are ill and off work.
My guess is that it’s people signed off due to mental illness.
The government want to force these people back into work, and I suspect they’ll do it by pulling away people’s life raft (first they have to dwindle your savings, increase your need for income and devalue your assets – which is already going on through inflation and increasing interest rates) the life raft is social support payments. They will change the categorisation so that there will be a new set of standards that must be met for people to be eligible to qualify for social support and the existing people that don’t qualify under these new standards will no longer receive payments and will be forced to undertake some sort of work.
I bet people would suffer fewer mental health problems if they didn’t have to deal with a government hell-bent on fucking up the economy, environment, and every social safety net around them.
As someone who works in the mental health field in the UK, the employee assistance programs have been extremely helpful for some people.
BUT.
This is not the answer to the widespread mental health difficulties that people face, it is simply trying to keep people in the rat race without offering any real support. People in work are coming into the service with financial worries, not knowing how they can afford to look after their family without accruing more debt. Someone suffering social phobia or agoraphobia to the point they cannot leave the house will not benefit from this. People experiencing depression due to the reality of the soul crushing machine we live in will not benefit from this.
This is nothing more than trying to keep a workforce for the owners, whilst blaming depression on people being lazy.
Yay as if mental heath services weren’t shite enough.
Getting a full time job helped me out of my depression to be fair.
This lot are fucking relentless aren’t they? Work work work. Yes we’ve screwed the economy and made jobs underpaid, thankless and unrewarding, that won’t buy you a house or keep you warm whilst you pay for someone else’s house, but that’s no excuse you slackers – now where is my expensed taxi to take me to my subsidised lunch?
I almost clicked and then saw it was Novara Media
Phew
Mentally ill? Interesting that they are targeting their own voter base with that….
I left teaching due to depression and anxiety. I had a week off before I started looking for a new job. Not only was that a mistake for not taking care of my mental health above everything else, it made job hunting much harder and more dispiriting. Filling out job applications all day took much more concentration and effort than I wanted to expend. Interviews were awful because my emotions were all over the place and I hated just going to them. The rejection emails felt like a deep cut, to the point that it is almost five years since I got the job I have now but I still hate opening my inbox because of the feeling it caused in my gut every morning. Work can help with depression but finding the right job is like finding a needle in the haystack; I got very lucky, most do not. It will require a level of sensitive support that no Tory government is going to provide, they will be all stick and no carrot.
Tories scapegoating the weakest in society, there’s a change; NOT! Tories have to be the most vilest inhumane creatures on the face of this planet.
Mental health services are criminally underfunded and almost non existent and have been for decades .
It’s a travesty
I feel like the only thing keeping some of the more horrifying policies at bay is the threat of a general election. They’re testing the waters with certain environmental protection repeals but if god forbid the public just don’t turn out the next GE and they are in charge again I feel like it’s the final nail in the coffin for our country.
Jesus, i’m a high functioning depressive with a full time job. I cant imagine what its like for those poor people who can’t even find the energy to brush their own hair.
It would take only a nudge for me to end up in my depression bed, with a politician screaming at me from my TV that I should be in a fucking office making fucking small talk at the water cooler with Garry from accounting who is one step away from hanging himself in the broom cupboard.
Fuck this timeline.
Work affects my mental health more than anything else in my life. I go to work, do fucking everything, pull extra hours out of my arse, go home, too tired to cook or clean, can’t sleep because I’m anxious because work, can’t enjoy my days off because I have to scrub my house because I don’t get time… I could do with less work, more money, and aot fucking less of the government telling me to work my fingers to the bone until i die.
To be fair, the Tories have got many people with serious mental problems like sociopathy and delusion into work as MPs.
Surely if they can do nothing of value for 84 grand a year plus expenses, anyone can get a job, right?
The floggings will continue, until morale improves!
This reminds me of my last Rimworld playthrough.
This should not remind me of my last Rimworld playthrough.
Uh huh…. They gonna redefine depression to just mean unemployed then? Maybe someone should tell them how many people with depression are already working. Hell, working in our work culture for as much as we do, for as little pay as we get is a huge part of why so many are depressed in the first place!
Can’t wait for the DWP to start going “Lol you’re just sad, get back to work peasant” all over again.
