Met police chief tells drivers not to get involved with Just Stop Oil protests

  1. Sounds fair, problem is…. If you’re in a car and now stuck because someone as decided to block the road, no matter how hard you tried to not be involved, is now involved.

So you either sit there and wait(you’re involved at this point), or the police can do their fucking jobs and considering the police aren’t currently doing their jobs, you’re left with no choice but to get involved.

This Chief…. I’m certain we lost a lot of talent in the last 20 years, we’re stuck with idiots.

  2. Sound common sense, nice to see that finally coming back. I know its early days, but honestly I’m getting the feeling this new chief might actually going to get the Met back on its feet.

  3. The police need to do their fucking job then. The police exist for a reason. Either do your job or move out of the way whilst others do it.

  4. Drivers have no choice because the police don’t deal with them quickly .
Funny how the kid gloves come out for some groups and it’s hardball for others

  5. Months of this nonsense from Extinction Rebellion and now these fools, they’re consistently good at achieving nothing. Yet, Reddit loves them and says this is the only way to do something or other.

  6. Interesting to read the comments here, on a sub that often advocates for protesting and defends their right to do so….

  7. In this thread: a bunch of people who have no idea how the law works who think that there are unfettered defences to assault, and no defences to obstruction of the highway.

Is there a citizen’s power of arrest? Yes, but only for indictable offences. Obstruction of the highway is not an indictable offence.

Is prevention of crime a defence? Yes. Does it mean you can drag people out of the road who are posing no threat to you because you *think* they are guilty of obstruction of the highway? Not without being guilty of assault, because that force isn’t reasonable and necessary in the circumstances. Human rights to freedom of assembly and expression trump a pissed off driver’s right to not be held up. If you want examples of countries where that is not the case, see: Russia, Iran, China. I know which I prefer.

Is prevention of crime a defence that only applies to assault? No. It applies to obstruction of the highway in exactly the same way. So they might not be guilty of committing a crime by sitting in the road.

  8. Where I come from, blocking motorways is a crime, no pedestrians as thats a crime, no vehicle driving under 70km/h as that will also give you a fine, driving within 10% of the speed limit of both ends as well so people aremt going too slow as well. Weird things people get to do around here

  9. we have some brigaders melting down over being told they can’t break the law because someone has inconvenienced them.

Wait till they hear about the people waking up with a bit of air out of their tyres lol

  10. Reckon these guys are paid for by big oil to make everyone hate anti oil protestors. Just as the Uk looks to seek more oil licenses contrary to targets for oil reduction.

  11. What happens when there’s a medical emergency, ambulance & such? Somebody speeding to the Hospital? What happens when the protesters don’t move and the Police by chance are nowhere to found? What reasonable alternatives are there then?

God, for all the positives that the UK does in *many* aspects, this is one of the few things I miss back home (Any form of purposefully blocking a highway to prevent traffic flow is a major offence and you will be slammed with hefty legal repercussions).

Take that what you will, but it’s too much of a grey area here in the Uk regarding resolutions for the common person that’s affected :/

  12. If people think that some protestors on the road is inconvenient just wait until we’re all getting fucked bloody by climate change.
