Topographic map of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

  1. Interesting fact showing how caste-like and stubbornly old-fashioned lawyers always were: until 1696 the official language of the courts and of the legal codes of the Great Duchy of Lithuania was Ruthenian i.e. language of the ancient Kyivan Rus (with some subsequent changes probably). It was only changed when the ruling elites have polonized so much that they become aware no one understood their own legalese anymore. But what a boon it was for the lawyers! 🙂
