This is cringe inducing but not at all surprising. It’s taught that “great” Britain should be proud of having had such a large empire in a modern era but they don’t teach the atrocities involved in attaining it. I think for many in the UK, there is a genuine naivety as to what British history actually holds and most are content to not even question the buttered-up version of history taught in schools.
I mean, yeah half the world hate Brits and have a terrible history of colonialism but most people have some national pride so it seems shit to begrudge him that. Maybe begrudge the fact that his pride is in the history of colonialism rather than a general sense of national pride.
I’m pretty sure Archer is being deliberately obtuse here because that is what he has been brought on to be, he’s a Sunday morning foreign talking head on a discussion show, its what they do. He’ll be a bit jingoistic, but knowingly so, they’ll make a few jokes, he’ll be insightful, give a hint of insider knowledge, perhaps ribald, and then they’ll leave it.

In fact, I think he’s showing an extremely high level of education, the sort of education that is rolled out in UK schools. This is the crap they are taught, I’ve talked to many friends in England about what they were taught in history at school and it’s mind-blowing. Rule Britannia is the name of the game for the English curriculum
