Direct provision residents with jobs should pay rent, says Eamon Ryan

  1. Would it not turn the premises into low rent barracks then? With all the landlord-tenant standards and regulations that won’t be adhered to, so there will be strife, compensations etc.

  2. Seems like a reasonable request. I’m not against the idea, I’m theory. There are some issues here for sure:

    1) the standard in DP (and now emergency and temporary accommodation) are not a decent enough standard to ask someone to pay. No one should be paying rent for these places, particularly not to the State.

    2) it may be a reasonable request if there were other properties available. There aren’t. The idea that this might push people out of DP and into the community, to free up beds, is frankly ridiculous.

    3) the main reason people are in DP so long is because the DOJ processes applications so slowly. Last year, the average waiting time for a first decision (not including appeals) was close to 2 years. Its likely longer now. People can’t get HAP until they have a positive decision on their case and are registered with the GNIB.

    4) people are really eager to move on from DP once they have status. Thinking that this will somehow branch the social/financial barriers to people moving out is lazy and insulting.

  3. Deeply disappointed in the Greens-remember when they were going to abolish DP altogether?

How many more compromises do they have to make before ‘it’s all worth it’? Surely now is the time to admit the coalition has cost them too much

  4. Direct provision is the next church scandal waiting to happen. The fact that Ryan has the stupidity to fall for making any comment about a fundamentally flawed solution like that just shows he’s a bigger ghobshit than I’d given him credit for… and he’s earned a LOT of credit so far. The FF/FG crew only tolerate him as they know they can throw him under one of his non-existent school buses any day now. Politics is about to get interesting and maybe drive some ideologically driven changes… for a change. I still firmly believe you’d be better off under my (mostly) magnanimous dictatorship but have it your own way, keep voting the same smeg-heads in and expect a different result… its what we’ve been doing for generations and sure it’s working out grand… but I gotta go now to wait for a bus that won’t come to take me to a medical appointment that will be cancelled because I’ve only been waiting 4 yrs. Instead I’ll go down to the Law Courts and see how they are getting on implementing the troika cap on legal fees… oops almost strayed into defamation territory there.
