Hello. I’ve recently gotten into the group Songleikr from the connection with Heilung and I have a couple questions about the song “Jenta Ho Gjekk Seg.”

What variety of Norwegian is this song in? It definitely seems a bit different from my limited understanding of Norwegian. Would anyone mind writing the lyrics as you here them in a comment? I found some lyrics in an online search but they don’t seem to fully match up with what I’m hearing. For example, the words *blanka* and *fjol* are written but I swear I’m hearing “branka” and “fjor.”

Thank you so much! Can anyone recommend any other groups that are in this similar realm?

  1. This is a traditional folk song from Gudbrandsdalen in Norway. The lyrics are correct and they are pronouncing it somewhat correct, but it’s quite obvious that none of them are from that area. You are hearing “fjor” because that area has a dialectal trait that makes ‘L’ sound like ‘R’. I’m not a huge fan of the sheer amount of bands/groups who are blatantly copying old folk songs, but if you want similar music it should be quite easy to find through suggestions on YouTube. There are a lot of groups doing the same.
