I just came across this on YouTube. I think it’s BS, right?

  1. You could make a different video for every canton, and then double it for the church tax for people without religion. and then multiply it for every year where someone works because the contributions will vary based on aged.

Maybe it makes sense somewhere at a specific age?

  2. Federal tax seems a bit high but overall taxes look about right. Not sure what personal tax is. Social contributions and pension aren’t usually counted as taxes.

  3. You don’t have pay church tax if you’re atheist, and pension fund contributions are not taxes. You will get it back once you retire and you can even get it back earlier if you want to buy a house.

  4. Nobody gets a 1M salary. They own a business and receive dividends, and they are taxed differently.

  5. Well… A few issues:

    – Church taxes are not mandatory, if you decide to pay them that’s fine, but you can also just fill out a form to not pay them.

    – Pension fund contributions, Insurance contributions and “Contributions to OASI, […]” are not taxes (they get deducted before tax!).

The numbers for cantonal and municipal taxes seem higher than I would have expected, but then again I don’t know what canton and what municipality they took as a basis and that can vary A LOT. Also 1M is definitely a different tax bracket to mine, so my intuition might be off.

In general, as others have mentioned 1M gross salary seems unrealistic, way before reaching such a salary you’re paid in shares, or some other means instead of just money – which then is taxed differently.

  6. Tricky….A lot of the numbers are not taxes and where are the deductions? If you have a million of gross income, you will be able to make a lot of deductions before your taxable amount.

And I quote – “Way before reaching such a salary you’re paid in shares, or some other means instead of just money”

Also it really depends on the Gemeinde and if you are married or not.

But, it the gross income of 1M is the taxable income, you’ll have to pay CHF 400’000 taxes (just run the calculation)

  7. Meh, depends – I think there are very few people that aim to *maximise* their taxes like they’ve done here.

Communal and canton can vary a ton. Social and pension contributions are not a tax (right?). Church tax is not required (but if you’re religious then you should contribute because I don’t want to pay for your cult). By non-occupational accident insurance do they mean medical insurance, because I don’t see that being much more than like 10k if you take the most expensive.

Also unlikely your ever make a 1M salary – you receive “bonus” in lieu of salary long before that. But in any country as you tend towards infinity for salary, you will approach the maximum tax bracket rate. If you make it 2M or 10M the tax presented here would remain similar.

In short – yeah, if you made 1M salary you could find a way to pay that much tax if you want.

  8. I think they are right, but 1) pension fund contribution is not a tax, it’s literally your money sitting on a pension fund; 2) church tax you can simply not paying by saying you don’t belong to any church.

It’s also arguable that unemployment and insurances are taxes. Then you should also add health insurance since it’s mandatory.

  9. Pension contributions and social insurances are not taxes. Take about 100k off and I’d agree it’s tax

  10. Honestly, I really think some people should be banned from posting anything anywhere. A tone of BS from this guy, I cringe when I see any of his videos pop up
