Egg in a cup is this just an Irish thing. Both daddy and baby having this for breakfast today. I’ve fond memories of my dad making it for me.

  1. I recently found out that this is called Guggy Egg

    “guggy egg (plural guggy eggs)

(Ireland) A dish for all ages consisting of a soft-to-medium boiled egg with butter, salt, and pepper, served mashed in a cup.”

  2. We used to make eggs like this in the microwave. Whisk it up and put it in for 30 seconds, then take it out and add butter and some salt and whisk it again to melt the butter, then put it back in until the egg starts mushrooming over the top of the cup. Not bad really.

  3. I never heard of them until I moved to Scotland. Woman I was seeing at the time made it for me. Since I come back I’ve never seen anyone make nor talk about it.

  4. Yeah my granny did this for me butter and a pinch of salt added.

Whereas my Da used to give me beaten up egg in a cup with a drop of milk and some sugar added

  5. From Germany, and I was raised with this, too. Though I remember my mum making it in glasses rather than cups.

  6. I moved to Australia 20 years ago and I make it for my kids every so often.

For them it’s a comfort food; something to be enjoyed when they’re sick or feeling down or just want something super tasty to eat.

I remember my Ma making it for me. And now I make it for my kids. “Eggs in a cup” is what we call it.

FWIW, in our house we always added a dash of vinegar. Amazing flavour.

  7. Have it at least once a week. Spread on luke warm toast with lots of butter so you get the cold butter with hot peppery egg combo. Washed down with hot tea. Delicious.

  8. Our version of this back in the 80’s, was out parents giving us raw eggs in milk. I have come to belief that they got most of their parenting tips from Rocky movies.

  9. Love it. Plenty of butter, bit of salt and pepper but not too much.

As a kid it was a near universal experience to eat this from a brown Pyrex mug.
