To me it always sounds like a J as in jerry, but whenever i hear a mainland Greeks impersonate Cypriots they do more of a CH sound as in chair.

If you wanna know why we make this sound in the first place you can listen to my podcast ‘intampou elalousan’ on most platforms:

  1. Doesn’t it depend on its position within the sentence? If the previous word ends with an ‘n’ or we insert an ‘n’ to connect words then it’s ‘je’. But if there is no ‘n’ before it or if we start a sentence with it e.g. ‘Che ego’, then it’s ‘che’.

It’s like standard Greek, if ‘τσ’ has a ‘ν’ before it, it becomes ‘τζ.

  2. The greeks simply can’t pronounce it like Cypriots. They don’t have something similar sounding in Greek.

  3. The company I’m working for the name starts with initials J.P…
Always when I’m asking for my check I have to explain J as John…
