So I’ve done some reading and it seems the general consensus is living in the North and West of Oslo is “best.” That being said, I’m not sure why. I have been looking for places to rent on [Finn.no](https://Finn.no) and for our situation there don’t seem to be a ton of options (see below). So, I’m wondering what neighborhoods we should be focusing on or perhaps anywhere we should avoid at all costs.

A little about us: Family of four (38, 38, 13, 11) and two dogs (small and medium/large). We are moving in mid-December to early January (not sure exact timeframe yet) with the plan to be long-term residents of Norway. We are open to living anywhere, hoping for something with good schools relatively close to the city or inside.

EDIT: We are looking to rent. Prefer to stay under 25000 NOK / month if possible. Can afford more if needed.

EDIT2: Looking for 100m2 plus, would settle for 80m2 if required.

Tusen Takk!

  1. What’s your price range and minimum size?

You’re not going to find a lot of decently sized places to live for a whole family in Oslo unless you have a huge budget. You’re usually better off looking at one of the satellite cities with train connection (30-60 min away), that’s going to increase your options drastically.

  2. You could go professional and get utleiemegleren.no , or similar, to look for you. Send them what you’re looking for, and they’ll provide some options for you.

  3. Oslo International School is at Bekkestua, west of Oslo. If that is important a place not too far from the T-bane/underground or not too far from Bekkestua might be right.

  4. Some schools in Norway, including several in the Oslo region, are part of the IB (International Baccalaureate) programme. This includes Lillestrøm videregående skole, https://www.ibo.org/school/000831/ as well as Bjørnholt videregående skole https://www.ibo.org/school/004665/ and Ås videregående skole https://www.ibo.org/school/000963/

Regarding locations: train connections south of Oslo are improving due to better railway connections, planned to open in December this year.

Areas south of Oslo like Kolbotn and Ski are quite close to Oslo, while also towns like Moss will have faster and better connections.

  5. Eidsvoll Verk / Råholt to the north, Moss, Vestby, Ås and Ski to the south, Asker to the west. 30 minutes trainride or less. But with 2 dogs you are in bad luck, almost no one would rent you a home if you have pets. You’re probably american, who thinks Norway is a picture perfect place. It’s not.

Why do so many Americans move to norway, it’s like we’re getting flooded by americans.

  6. So not to be picky but I notice you have a very close, but flexible timeframe. Do you have a job and/or permits approved over here already setup? I only ask as jobs tend to have a pretty fixed start date.

Have any of you had experience speaking Norwegian or taking lessons?
