amazon.com.be still needs some work…

  1. Strange that they didn’t buy out the company owning Amazon.be

I wonder if prices will be higher then on Amazon.nl. Prime is reasonably priced but as long as Belgians are getting primarily French content with subtitles only available in French, I don’t see the point.

  2. They’re paying their translators peanuts to check their own crappy machine translation.

Source: I was asked to take care of some translations for them. Didn’t do it, obviously.

  3. I cant tell you how much it aggravates me that even sometimes websites either have mixed french and dutch on the same page, or automatically go to french like the microsoft page does, instead of having a splashscreen ask dutch or french first.

  4. I was browsing for silicone molds a while back. They should really check their translations because “schimmel” is not the word you want to use to sell a baking mold.

  5. ik vond dit ook benoemenswaardig…

    EDIT: removed the “ref”-part

  6. I did a quick search for some Blu-rays, and boy that’s a whole bag of crap. German releases, French releases, perhaps some BeNeLux releases, but of course none of the ones that would really interest buyers: UK releases from the likes of Arrow etc.

  7. So the landing page is in French, because of course it is, and the entire catalog is ran through a beta version of google translate. To add insult to injury, everything is more expensive than the German or Dutch site.

Who is going to use this?

  8. I’m currently subscribed to prime on amazon.nl . Is it wise to switch to prime on amazon.com.be?

  9. If you haven’t seen how the back end of a web store works I can tell you that you have no idea how much insane hard work goes into running that.

Amazon has to be one of the most elaborate online stores on the planet. They’re a global player, they are easily going to employ thousands upon thousands of people for their online store alone.

Just managing the art assets has to be a nightmare to follow up on. Pricing needs to be adjusted, localisation has to happen, business plans with regards to how revenue is generated, recognised, local tax law and payment processing.

The amount of detail that goes into making something like that work is just a stupid amount of stupid hard work.

I don’t like Amazon for how they treat their warehouse workers [or a lot of their other teams] and that’s why I don’t buy from them, but the backend to run this store, on a global scale, is so phenomenal that it’s nothing short of a living work of industrial art. And I say that without a shred of sarcasm.

  10. yes, since when did belgium get a amazon release? I thought it was coming much later this year, really happy since i usually order from amazon fr, finally can order from be
