Thought it would be a good idea to make a separate post about this, since many people seem to be having trouble with suppliers increasing advance payment invoices.
If you have a digital gas/electricity meter, you can request to pay for your actual usage monthly. Not all providers offer this, but it should be possible with Engie, Luminus, Mega and Eneco.
Added benefit of this is that you do not risk losing your advance payments if your provider goes bankrupt. One possible downside is that your costs aren’t evenly spread out anymore.

Keep in mind if you go for a digital meter, the new capacity costs with 15min peek calculations will become active for you from 01/2023 going forward. Noone has any clue how this will be calculated and what the effect will be vs the neutral calculation when you have no digital meter.
Personally I would not bring in the digital meter as long as it’s not clear what the impact will be on my distribution costs.
If that’s possible, that’s a life-changer for me. I’m very frugal and I always felt I paid too much for electricity. Bedankt beaucoup schön OP.
Do you know if this is also a possibility in Brussels? We are doing a lot to lower our usage so it would be great to be able to get rid of the “average price” problem that comes with the yearly bill.
While this might be very handy for some, please consider that your gas usage probably goes up by a factor of 10 or more in winter (if you use both gas for sanitary warm water and heating)
Random non inflated example: ypu used to pay 100 euro per month all year long.
So you might pay 20 euro in summer per month now , but then the rest of the amount you paid was an advance for your winter usage. So when winter comes you need to pay your direct usage instead of having it spread out.
Remember, heating is about 70 to 80% of your gas usage, and it´s mostly in about 4 months, so you pay 1/3 a month for your heating costs with a fixed advance.
Don´t fuck yourself over without considering this please.
Also consider electricity usage is higher in winter as well.
In a slightly unrelated question: if we still have the old analog meters, is there any way to push our landlord to have digital meters installed?
im getting a digital meter this friday and was wondering this.
Thank you for the info, im even with Luminus so ill try to get it sorted
Not sure you’re going to be happy about doing this during winter.
