Lads, I moved into a new build a while back but they left a load of wires protruding from the ceiling beside the mains box. Anybody know what they are and I I can snip them once the mains is off? They’re very unsightly.

  1. Alarm wires if you want to install a system. Do not cut them. You could just buy an empty fuse board and hide them inside that if you want to tidy it up.

  2. Dont snip them, dont go near them… this is what a snag list is for. Contact the vendor and tell them to sort it out

  3. Alarm wires, in case you’re going for a wired system, and you’ll probably find the other ends in the various downstairs rooms. I have a wireless system in my house, so snipped them all off

  4. Security installer here, these are cables for each zone of an intruder alarm. Each cable will go to a room/door for detection, this is where your main alarm panel would be if they had fitted it.

  5. Make some room around them where they come out if the ceiling and ouch them all up into the void then patch ceiling. If you ever decide to install an alarm you know where they all are and won’t end up with short cables. The power supply what comes from the board shouldn’t even be connected to power and would most likely just be lying inside the board u connected. Nothing there will have power of any kind

  6. Looks like a few different cables there, the small ones are definitely for an alarm, could be ethernet cable and there could be a car charger cable there too that goes to the front of the house, there mandatory in new builds so definitely don’t cut them

  7. Alarm cables, buy a 1-row domestic consumer unit and mount it against the ceiling to hide the cables if you’re not going to have a wired alarm installed.

    Don’t cut them.

The grey cable in the OBO box is most likely live.

  8. Spark here – yes comments are correct these are alarm cables. Can get a facia to cover them if you ever intend on installing a system if you don’t it’s fine to snip them but I’d recommend not doing so.

  9. They are alarm wires for sure, if you want a wired alarm they will tidy them up. If you don’t ever want a wired alarm you could remove them but most just leave them dangle. I got securiguard in for my alarm and it’s expensive but you don’t have to worry about batteries or whatever so I’d highly recommend getting in a wired system. It doesn’t have to be monitored either, you can use an app to set it and everything.

  10. Why are the wires there if there is no alarm though? Like the went through half the steps for installing an alarm and then gave up?

  11. You may try pushing them up into the ceiling, and just leave a nub to pull them back down if needed. You may need to cut the spray foam away from the cables a bit.
