Drugs aren’t going to make you happier? This guy needs a good sesh!
Seriously though, the war on drugs was never winnable, what are they even doing at this point except being typical Conservatives?
This in conjunction with the [other story about drug detection dogs in Westminster](https://redd.it/r9cly9) causes me much amusement.
It only makes sense to keep most drugs illegal if you also ban alcohol. The USA tried this a hundred years ago and the world still hasn’t learnt that prohibition just doesn’t work.
Fuck me, Boris is in trouble. Rabble rousing over drugs is the last resort of a man with no ideas left. The UK public wants cannabis legalised and he’s banging on about drugs being the devil with a subsidised fucking bar in the HoC
Always the fucking drugs never the corruption, traffic laws or you know actually addressing the causes of crime.
Think Boris is getting confused, its the tax dodger’s, sleazy politicians and corrupt corporate criminals who would be hurt by losing their passport, not the Tory cliche ‘hard drug user’.
Illegal drug users like … err … Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, and Dominic Raab?
Smells like a dead cat to me. What are they trying to bury?
He told The Sun:
“Drugs are driving a lot of misery and we can fix it”
BJ has got it the wrong way round, the misery comes before the drugs.
The drugs are an attempt to escape the misery.
Always the drugs and never the causes of drug use like: poverty, inequality, abuse, social exclusion; which drive people to drugs.
Will that include coke fiend Michael Gove and the other Tories who party with him?
I am a dutchman who recently moved to the UK. This confuses me. Proposing harsher punishments on drug users is never proposed in NL, not even by the conservative parties.
It wouldn’t win you much politically. Our ‘tough on drugs’ politicians always target the drug dealers/suppliers in their rhetoric.
Is there a sizable chunk of the electorate in the UK that likes to hear this stuff? That the law enforcement will be coming down VERY HARD on drug users?
So 300,000 drug users (mainly crack and heroin) are driving the most acquisitive crime in the UK- robberies, burglaries, theft. Anything they can get their hands on to sell for a fix.
These people are not going on holiday or legally using their driving licences to get insured on vehicles.
How the hell will taking passports and driving licences away do anything at all?
Do they mean they’re thinking about taking passports away from the top level drug dealers? That’s the only thing I can think of being vaguely useful. But convicting people at the top is so rare it’s almost useless even considering it.
Also known as the “British crack for British crack heads! Keep our cocaine white!” policy.
Will someone think of the children and ban accidents? How many youngsters have died as a result of Labour not doing more to stop this?
This is the most nonsensical and ridiculous take on rehabilitation I’ve ever seen in my life.
Taking away a heroin addict’s passport is not going to suddenly make them think “oh you know what, I don’t want any heroin anymore”.
It’s dehumanising them and making it harder for them to rehabilitate themselves.
This from the man who supposedly put “icing sugar” up his nose at a party.
Drugs deaths lie with the government alone. There are plenty of alternatives like Portugal have managed. But we can’t have the pearl clutching OAP daily mail readers getting upset.
Jokes on you Bojo, I sold mine to buy more drugs ages ago.
I’m sure he just means the poor drug users, not the rich ones or the ones who sit in Parliament.
If we ever get to a system in place, that weeds out politicians who are addicted to power, then we might get some sensible, evidence-based drug laws.
At present we appear to have the opposite – a political system that allows and encourages power addicted politicians to indulge in their addiction.
How is Michael Gove going to go on holiday? Admitted hard drug user.
Boris Johnson chats some random bollocks to generate headlines and outrage to distract public from x news/event, public fall for it hook line and sinker.
Rinse and repeat as after years public still fall for it.
Yes. All them junkies that have passports. When was the last time you met a fuckin smack head in Spain during a pandemic having a week off it. Idiot.
Another assault on Human Rights.
“Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.”
Is this a joke? Drug users and abusers need help not further alienation and harsher rules which have been shown not to work. There’s much research about the psychological aspect of it. Enough to wonder what the heck is this about?
It’s unprecedented to remove a passport from a **user** of illegal drugs. They are also saying driving licences will be taken.
How will a person live honestly without such things?
This is completely sick and inhumane. There are hundreds of thousands chronic pain patients that use cannabis or opiates which they cannot access on NHS and cannot afford to get private prescription.
Without addressing root causes of why people seek to use drugs in the first place, this is only going to drive prices up and increase crime as a result.
Probably that’s the goal – increase control over people and keep police busy with sheer volume of “trivial” crime and make sure they don’t have time to sniff about corruption that is going on.
I am speechless.
The article has few details, but this move sounds like a step towards removing citizenship.
Citizenship and similar legal and/or social statuses – having various basic legal rights, being seen as a member of communities – are what prevent governments and mobs from treating people as scapegoats and as mere objects (as the likes of Arendt and Weil have pointed out). The Second World War, and Guantanamo Bay, should have taught us not to go down this road.
So if I get caught having a spliff am I done, no country!!
Most major developed countries are de-criminalising/legalising drugs yet this morons on another planet.
Do you get the feeling he hasn’t got a fucking clue & he’s making this bollocks up as goes along, although this has Patel written all over it.
Going to get an Irish passport, been meaning to do it for years.
Everything about this government disgusts me.
Hasn’t there also been talk about requiring IDs to vote? Sounds like a move towards disenfranchising an “undesirable” segment of society.
Yet another 10 year “War on Drugs” brought to you by the rich people taking drugs themselves….bunch of fucking wankers determined to keep their lifestyle while criminalising everyone else, removing their freedom/ adding them to the prison / free slave labour service, stopping them from voting as you need theses photo IDs to vote….and helping to rip up the human rights act at the very same time….freedom of movement
When will the UK government ever listen to experts and realise that the war on drugs is the biggest failure ever.
Millions have died
Drugs are more available
Drugs are more dangerous
Life’s are shattered
Abolish the war on drugs move to a completely regulated drug market with safety information, labels and testing.
All this idea does is push more suffering on people than their already is and does absolutely nothing to combat drug use whatsoever…
It’s never been a war on drugs
It’s a war on people …
We’ve lost a lot of migrant labour and I believe this is the first step towards creating a new “underclass” of cheap labourers who are indentured to their low paid jobs, and better still for the Tories who will profit from that, they can’t even leave the country in search of better prospects, something that should be everyone’s right. Regulated yes, documented yes, but everyone’s right as humans on Earth to travel or migrate if they have enough money to do so.
In Britannia Unchained, the book by Truss, Patel, Raab et. al.(where Raab’s quote about working British people came from: “The British are among the worst idlers in the world. We work among the lowest hours, we retire early and our productivity is poor. Whereas Indian children aspire to be doctors or businessmen, the British are more interested in football and pop music.”), there’s much talk of reforming (read: deregulating) UK Employment law, which they did.
Patel occasionally brags about her time operating tobacco sweatshops in what was then called Burma, and the wonderful ways of skirting human rights and fair pay, not to mention the many donations that she gave the military government there for reasons “unknown”, though I’m sure some of her old employees at those factories may know for what purpose the bribes and lobbies to that government and military were.
We’re about to be subject to the social experiments of a mad, inbred group of Nero-esque nihilists.
They lost the war on drugs so now it’s a war on people. Make it so anyone who doesn’t fit their demographic can’t drive, get a job or vote.
While this is billed as being aimed at crack and heroin users it will I suspect be far more broadly applied to cannabis users who can’t afford a PERSCRIPTION.
Notice how all these laws are being brought in immediately after making protest in the UK illegal.
The tin foil hat boys are starting to look like they’ve been on to something. We are in for dangerous times ahead.
Depriving rights from people with an addiction they wish they didn’t have driven by causes they wish weren’t true. Draconian.
So with the whole “need photo ID to vote” thing they’re trying, what they’re actually trying to do is “remove the right to vote from drug users”. Not fixing the issue. Not trying decriminalisation. Just straight up disenfranchisement.
We’re continuing to slide into an authoritarian nightmare and we’re just taking it.
This is so idiotic it’s making my blood boil. He claims they’re introducing “prison reforms to reduce reoffending rates by helping inmates find work” yet they’re taking away the documents that are required for any legal job? Headline doesn’t mention it but they’re taking away driving licenses too. Genuinely what the fuck, why are we still treating a medical issue as a crime?
Britain is THE largest exporter of MJ in the world. I have been in Canada for the past 3 years. I’ve quit drinking; i was sick of waking up feeling like absolute crap whenever i had a couple of beers. Ive fully switched to MJ, it helps regulate sleep, appetite and my mental health has overall been more stable.
I also take LSD every month or so. My family also made the switch (after a family member delveloped MS and CBD products helped eliminate pain and helped with recovey), mostly to CBD products, in addition to ayahuasca retreats and microdosing shrooms.
I could be prevented from travelling, for using a naturally occuring substance, that is continually showing promise for medical advancement. MJ, MDMA/E, LSD, Shrooms, ayahuasca and DMT are all being clincially trialled to treat mental health issues (anxiety, ptsd) and are showing positive trends in treatment.
Yet, some rich twats can take the harmful stuff and watch us regular folks who need it for health can have our wings clipped.
Really hope I don’t have to return to this nanostate.
How will removing passports from people that take illegal drugs help crackdown on crime at all? Is this an actual policy or have I gone fucking insane?
What makes this even more ridiculous is that all but one of 12 parliament toilets have tested positive for cocaine, toilets only accessable to people with parliamentary passes. So the seat of government is regularly governing while on coke. Are they going to take their passports away?
