  1. If it suddenly doesn’t feel like tradition when the world is looking at you, it was never tradition to begin with.

  2. Brilliant. This shite will get global coverage now. If this was recent it couldn’t come at a better time with the uproar/ faux outrage over the women’s soccer team.

  3. And yet the women’s football team get demonised 🤷‍♂️ double standards eh? Should ask that pricksenter from sky what he thinks of this and what education should happen to rectify this.

  4. I was working in Sweden for a while and showed some of the swedish guys a picture of one of the bonfires, and explained the whole flag and kat and election poster thing. They were horrified that this could happen in civilized Europe in the past, they assumed it was from the 60s or 70s . I had to explain to them that the picture was from that day’s newspaper.
They were amazed that it wasn’t on every news station that the absolute kkk level of bigotry was in a developed country in their midst.

  5. Things like this give me concern for the future. Polling suggests that NI will eventually choose to reunify but regardless, loyalist zealots will remain and cause trouble.

The UVF never actually disbanded and still operates as a mafia with thousands of members. If a referendum is held they will certainly not accept the democratically chosen result.

  6. I visited Belfast on the weekend of this festival on accident and it blew my mind that it existed.

  7. Don’t forget the thousands of pounds it also costs to have fire crews attend bonfires to dowse down house to stop them igniting due to the fact that they build these fuckers too close and God forbid you complain

  8. Is that the flag of the Popular People’s Front of the Occupied Six Counties, splitters, or just a regular Palestinian one?

  9. Staying away from politics, but it’s just really negative. I was there a few years back talking to some one fellla and he was telling me proudly he was going to take his boy up in to the mountains to watch it burn from afar…

  10. Rage had a dedication in the liner notes of their debut album to the RA and Bobby Sands, among many others. Wait til RTE and co hear about this.

  11. Lads , we’re locking the comments and will reopen them tomorrow when they can be properly monitored. We’ve had some of the popular posts brigaded by english nationalists over the last day or so and we don’t want the same happening here after we hit the leaba. We’ll unlock it again tomorrow morning. Go raibh maith agaibh agus oíche mhaith!

    Unlocked

  12. It’s a rather shocking display and it’s utterly bizarre that it’s tolerated in a developed society. If you did that in any other part of the UK, you’d be charged under hate crime legislation. So it’s fairly obvious that it’s legally tolerated in Northern Ireland and also by the UK, because they are making hate crime a devolved responsibility, probably to avoid upsetting the local political representatives of certain parties.

Even without modern hate crime legislation, making public death threats has always been a criminal matter. They’re choosing not to investigate or prosecute, which says it all really.
