Speed Limits on Achill Island

  1. Depends which side of the road you’re driving on. If you’re driving into oncoming traffic, you need to go a little slower.

  2. Photoshopped? The sign on the right looks like it‘s not properly aligned with a sign underneath, which is probably facing in the correct direction. Also, assuming that all signs of this kind are exactly identical except for the number, the sign on the right is a bit off-set to the left. The bottom end of the slash between km and h on the left sign is aligned with the middle of the post, the bottom of the slash of the right sign is left center of the post – which looks pretty much in line with the off-set dark “drop shadow” of the real sign behnd it.

  3. The right hand sign must have been blown around by a strong wind, and is leading into a built up area. The other is leaving the built up area and that’s why they are different.

  4. I was there today for the first time in my life.

    Gorgeous part of the world.

But it’s either nervous tourists going very slowly or frustrated locals trying to literally fly around.

  5. 50 sign is rotated. The 60 sign is for driving away from an urban area, the 50 for entering. Obey the sign on your left.

  6. I’ve been in Achill on a windy day – one of those signs got turned around.

Besides, no one minds the limit anyway.

  7. Why do they even have a sign on the right side of a 2 way road? Aren’t signs like supposed to be on the left because we drive on the left?
