Free travel for over-60s may never return

  1. Another thing the English allow to happen unopposed.
Tuition fees, no social care support, no pensioner support, dismantle of the health service, etc…. what’s the point in having a society if your not interested in being civil anymore?

  2. I guess it would be now that I’m approaching 60. I don’t think it applied at peak ‘work’ times anyway. Yeah, charge people more for working as always.

  3. What in the actual hell are we even discussing. Why should the single richest cohort in the country get a goddamned thing free. We should be means testing the state pension.

  4. Yet again, this Government talks a lot about reducing emissions but then discourages people from using Public Transport. Saving the environment is a priority until it costs money

  5. **Pre-9am** they missed that out of the clickbait headline.

Let us be 100% honest about what free travel is, it’s a subsidy for public transport. Pre-9am buses can be packed with commuters and school kids, so they are collecting enough in fares to pay for themselves. Having over 60s on those buses will make them even busier.

  6. I don’t get why well-off pensioners, possibly en-route to this month’s cruise, get free travel. There needs to be a more targeted system of benefits.

  7. Great for pensioners. It’s an excuse to have a lie in. “sorry don’t get free travel till after 9 I’ll meet you at 10 instead”

  8. Free over 60’s travel is a ball ache round my way, had to stand up for a 25 mile journey as all the seats were taken up by the over 60’s.

  9. All of the 60+ subsidies were introduced at a time when pensioners were in poverty compared to the rest of the population. It was never meant to be some “freebie reward” for being retired. Now the entire situation has reversed and the most affluent demographic is our society is the 60+ range so it’s well over due that these perks should be means tested.

What we don’t want to happen is for all these things to be cut and then find we’ve created pensioner poverty for the Boomers who aren’t rich and eventually for an entire generation who are not going to have the sort of pensions that will be anything like their parents.

  10. They paid full travel for 40 years so they get free travel. They paid for it. I. Time, you will get it too.

  11. I don’t see why pensioners should get free travel, when adult ticket prices in my area have increased massively in the past 10 years. They should pay something like child prices, not completely free.

  12. Its interesting that age discrimination only goes one way. You could easily argue as a 31 year old that you are being discriminated against.

  13. Started free after 9:30 in Scotland – then moved to anytime – works well but maybe not in high populated English cities

Under 22 also can now travel free
